Buying experience - an interesting eBay exchange

Afternoon All,

I'm currently looking tp upgrate my wonderful TD6 to a facelift 2010 TDV8. No issues withthe TD6, I'm just looking for something a bit more refined on the motorway.

Anyway, I came across a nice looking 2010 model on eBay and messaged the seller asking some further questions. I had noted in the MOT history that there was previous damage to the windscreen and fairly regular advisories concerning worn bushes. I therefore wanted to know if the windscreen had been replaced and essentially whether the heated screen was working correctly, and whether or not the bushes were placed. The seller also told me that the service history is only available from 90k onwards which I thought was a little strange and asked whether or not the log book had just been misplaced (I used the work dissapeared in my email).

Anyway, the seller responded as follows: "sorry but I don’t appreciate that sort of attitude and will not go on further with all these questions. I think you’d be much better off going into a dealership and buying a brand new 2021 car with a warranty instead of hoping for a brand new 2010 one, thank you."

I don't really think that what I asked was out of order, but if you were the seller would you be Censored ed off with my questions?

Annoyingly, I still really like the car, but I'm a bit reluctant to deal with the guy after that response. Maybe its just a misunderstanding and some further emails back and forth will resolve things.

Also, if anyone is selling a TDV8 with the facelift interior for less than 10k, i'd be interested in hearing about it.

You copy and pasted his response, why not do the same with your request and then we could give you a second opinion on whether it had “attitude” or not!

fair enough! Laughing

Hi xx,

Thanks for the quick response. Could you send me a quick photo of the rust and one of the wear to the drivers seat? If it's easier, please feel free to send them to my mobile (xxxxxxx). Has the log book just disappeared?

Could you also clear up some questions regarding the MOT history: Have the bushes been replaced as I see that was listed as a "strong advise" in 2018 and in 2016, there was damage noted to the windscreen offside upper - has the windscreen been replaced are there any issues with the front heated screen?

Cheers

Tom

If you're serious, show it to him starting by calling him rather than via email. It makes a huge difference.
you'll learn more from his tone, voice, and even surrounding noise about him and the car than you can via email.
offer to come to see it, if anything if off, he'll tell you he cant show it to you, find another one then. There's plenty of them. l=Oo\________/oO=l l:OolΞΞΞΞΞΞΞloO:l

Seems reasonable to me.

Walk away and forget about it. A response like that suggests there is a lot more wrong with it. Or count to ten, go check it out, scan it and negotiate. For an old car like that, as is mine, I’d not be too worried about missing early life service history. But I do care about current state of maintenance.

I've had the same thing with this on eBay. Asking civilised questions & requesting further photos, only to get a similar response.
Funny enough, it never did sell. Enough said really.

eBay is full of scammers BEWARE? don't travel to far, if you stand in front of the car you can do a better deal than by email?

I posted about my experience of going to look at a 2013 L406 Autobiograpy which was described as immaculate with a full main dealer service history. It was basically a waste of fuel and a waste of a few hours of my life that I won’t get back...lol

There is a reason cars are advertised on EBay..

I’ve been on both sides of this situation, as a genuine seller I never cease to be amazed at the type of questions asked & on occasion, rude & aggressive msg’s. with no apparent provocation. eBay transports you into a very strange world of characters.

On the plus side, I’ve also dealt with many very genuine & decent people on eBay, the majority in fact, so I haven’t written off using it just yet.

Your questions seem perfectly reasonable to me.

Thanks for all the thoughtful responses. It might simply be the case that he got the wrong end of the stick - could have been a tough day in work, who know?

I'll see if he responds but i'm sure something just as good will come up with a little patience even if he doesn't.

I bought my TD6 off a guy from eBay and had a great experince. I suppose it's just your luck.

I think I've found the car you're looking at on Ebay. It was the first one that came up in my search and the MOT history mentions upper O/S windscreen damage (back in April 2016), so pretty certain it'll be the same car.

If it is the same car, the seller's Ebay feedback would put me off. As a seller he has received 5 seller feedbacks, of which two are negative and one is neutral. So not a very good track record there.
