Why do I have this urge to buy a troublesome FF

Hi all,

Sold my RRS last year, ever since the sale it’s left a big void.
I don’t regret selling it, as I feel I needed a change.
The plan was always to go back to a newer sport, in L494 form.
Recently I’ve found myself browsing at sub td6 £4k fattys, often with known faults.
I enjoy carrying out my own maintenance, and generally getting my hands dirty. (Ex HGV Mechanic)

My plans is to go mooching around Europe later in the year, fingers crossed.

My sport was amazing on European road trips.

I don’t think I’ll be able to get so involved with an L494, or am I just going backwards.

Green exterior with cream leathers, is definitely my favorite combo.

Anyone else gone from a sport to FFRR

Most guys on here would be too embarrassed to say they owned a Sport in the past.... Rolling with laughter

Oh, and they are not troublesome they just need lots of loving... Thumbs Up Pete

Can’t see why you would be embarrassed of a sport, when they look so much nicer Thumbs Up

I had two Sports, having previously had Freelander 1s. I thought both were great cars, neither caused me grief but neither had the luxury of a proper FFRR. I see ownership of a Sport as a stepping stone to a FFRR

Just buy whatever one you like, doesn’t have to be a sub £4K TD6, they’re all troublesome at some point Laughing .

Having the same urge..... However I wouldn't go with a TD6, if you are going older then go the whole hog and get the petrol.... or a little newer and the 4.2sc or 4.4 Jag engined one.

have been browsing on eBay for the past few weeks looking at 322's trying to convince SWMBO she NEEDS a FF in her life. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I had an L320 Sport and now a L405 VSE. I loved my Sport, it was a great vehicle but the L405 is something else in comparison Smile Kev

United Kingdom

I've had 3 L320s, the first was a 4.4V8 which was great, virtually trouble free, then a really problematic 3.6 TDV8 which had already had a new engine from LR but then had the dreaded turbo failure (fortunately under JLR warranty) after which it had issue after issue, seemed that limp home mode became part of daily life and was eventually taken back by the LR dealer and replaced with another which was fine for the 6 months i owned it.

They are a nice enough car if you get a decent one, agree an effective long range touring vehicle and fine if you don't have too many issues but personally prefer the FF but like any LR vehicle the risk of reliability issues always stalks like the automotive grim reaper! RR Vogue TDV8 Grey/Black

I was warned about buying a RR before I purchased my RRS, I had that just over 2 years and it wasn’t too bad.

Someone once told me, if your not spending a grand or two on maintenance, in a year. Then your not maintaining it properly.

Quite a bit of truth in that Bow down

Something like that....

Personally I’ve never found them that expensive to run, if you are handy with the spanners or know a decent local garage or indie, unless something goes bang then they aren’t much more than a normal car.

Just have to treat suspension as a consumable item which will need replacing every 5 years or so. There are many things to look out for, but all that knowledge is on here somewhere. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

If you're doing the work yourself its a completely different proposition.

Mine's had ABS sensors, wheel bearing which also knackered the reluctor ring, front strut, caliper, heater resistor, bits of welding in 9 months of ownership, if I was paying someone for that I'd be in for more than it cost.

My advice to anyone looking at a 4k car, particularly a TD6 is its just a 2k car that's had a wash. In my view you're better going cheap and leaving some money in the bank, the only exception being engine or transmission which I'd walk away from, there's enjoyment of working on your own stuff and there's taking on a big job on your path that's going to commit you to fixing it more than driving it.

I think if mine ever needs to sit in the shop for more than a few days then its curtains but I'll happily do all the one or two day jobs and drive something else while its in bits so its not rushing me.

I'd also steer away from TDV8 for that reason, the cheap ones appear to be more of a time-bomb for turbos particularly if they're being punted because its showing signs.

That Sports a nice looking thing BTW, for a Sport Wink
