corrosion, rust and rot....

Hi, some weeks ago I spotted some wet spots under the sill. First I thought it was melting snow which builded up under the sidesteps. But then after days of warm weather I returned to the FFRR after some shopping and there again was a wet spot under the sill. After a quick inspection it seemed brake fluid.... Rolling Eyes At home a thourough inspection: yeah, right both brake lines to the rear where totally rotten Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry . What a dissappointment for such a upper class car and such a poor construction: it sure was designed to get al the salt water and hold it as long as possible to do its destructive work!?!

Of course had to fix this urgently and when I was under the car I took the opportunity to fight the rest of the rust and rot. I had some bubbling at the rear of the sill where it goes up to the rear wheel arch. After dismantling the plastic sill protector the screwdriver went trough the rust...

Now some panel beating was on and then some welding. All fixed now. Tomorrow rust prevention and bolting all the parts together.

Good stuff, nice to see it all chopped out. "While you're in there" does have a habit of getting out of hand haha. A good reminder for us all to stick out heads under there and keep an eye on the brake lines, it happens to all steel lines eventually....... 2011 Vogue SE Tdv8 FFRR

You're right: the steel lines are definitely a weak point to watch for!. Also check under the nearside front wheealarch liner. Especially under the small plastic cover which can be removed when the liner is out. Mine where not that bad, so could be saved. But they can rot as well!!
But the flex ones at the rear had to be replaced.

Brake lines have been rotting and exploding on classics/P38's and surprise surprise they do the same on 322's Whistle Whistle Whistle

Been changing some on L405's recently!

The crying shame is it could be so cheaply avoided at manufacture and they can hardly claim to be on the limit price wise with these vehicles. They charge top dollar yet give economy quality. BMW i3 Electric Car

Yep same here, also been doing some ARC pipes too on early L405’s, with all the materials available to them why do they use steel unprotected. Big Cry

Have been restoring oldtimers (triumph, Jaguar) for some time so panel beating is all in the game Whistle

Once you're there is definitely true Rolling with laughter So have derusted the whole underbody (sills, spotwelds, subframes etc) with wire brusch, then Owatrol, then two layers of Ovagrundol, after that two layers of chassis paint. Today topped it all up with underbody wax. Must be good for some years now I hope.

Two years ago we moved form Belgium to Austria. Before that I treated the underbody in the "lowlands" way. But unfortunately that didn't last very long here Big Cry Big Cry I'm really flabbergasted of how much salt they throw on the streets here Censored
