2018 L405 - Motorway Vibration

Hi Everyone,

New RR owner here with a rather irritating problem. 2018 Autobiography on 22 inch wheels with Pirelli Scorpion Verdes, circa 5-6mm of tread with the car having covered 10k miles. At speeds of 75mph plus I get a vibration coming through the car, I can see the passenger seat moving at times but it varies in it's intensity and can sometimes be worse when cornering. Wheels have been balanced three times now by different garages and I have had the tyres taken off to check for foam delamination.

Braking has on occasion felt like it makes the vibration more pronounced but it does not feel like a warped disk.

It is really spoiling what would be an otherwise perfect car. Does anyone have any similar experiences or ideas as to where I should look ? I really hope this is not a case of "they all do that sir" because it ruins a motorway journey for me.

welcome to the forum..


if at all practical i would fit a set of 20'' or 21'' tyres/wheels to see if that solves the problem...if not then it has to be mechanical .. ... - .- -.

Thanks guys. Andy does your new car suffer with it in any form ? You have the same wheels as me. Are you on Pirelli’s as well please ? I’ve had a read of that thread and am praying for a mishapen tyre !

Re the suggestion of 20/21 inch that will be my next step, but will probably have to buy a set to do it and that’s a bit of a lumpy guessing game !

They certainly don't all do that. If you have a full size spare wheel with about the same tread depth you could try changing it for each of the existing wheels in turn in case that makes a difference.

LR recommend not rotating wheels around the car as the tread wears to suit the particular position. Rotating to a different position can cause vibration, but I have found it only really to happen with blockier tread tyres such as the old Goodyear MT/Rs and it is less likely with 22s and road tyres, but that might be a factor for you.

As you have only just bought the car, if it was from a dealer then you might be as well to take it back and invite them to fix it under warranty, even a private purchase might still be within the three year warranty on a 2018 car? They could presumably lend you a set of four wheels off one of their stock cars to try if they make a difference, ideally drive accompanied by a technician. Damaged steering components might be a possibility.

Good luck, it would really annoy me anyway. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Thank you. I do have a full size spare, that’s a good idea. The car is with my local dealer now, I bought it from Marshall in Oxford who re balanced the wheels once but I’m not at all convinced they are looking hard for the fault.

I’m glad to hear they don’t all do it because I love the car otherwise.

I’ll report back with what Harwoods Pulborough find.

I agree that this would be a good idea to do.

It's interesting you say that LR recommend not to rotate the wheels. I noticed on the L405 service sheets that they state "Refit road wheels to opposite sides of the same axle (Use anti-seize compound on spigot bore)."

On rotation, the handbook just has a red warning "do not rotate tyres around the vehicle", so odd that the service sheet would be inconsistent with that. See ownerinfo.landrover.com, selecting model year. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Update is that the technician could feel the vibration, which is positive. On checking the wheels some apparently had no weights, which I find odd but can only suppose they have fallen off. Weird.

They have now road force balanced all four wheels (I have heard this is worthwhile doing and will show runout problems) and now no vibration. Collecting the car in the morning so fingers crossed that’s fixed it.

I've had a vibration problem on two L322s at motorway speed and both times it turned out to be a sticking rear brake calliper - worth having those checked? If they are sticking, they get hotter the faster you go which is why it's noticeable at motorway speeds and then seems to go away in town. 5.0 S/C Autobiography

Previously:

4.4 AJ V8 Vogue, RRC, 4.6 VSE P38, Disco V8, SIII V8 - there's a theme here! Plus multiple others, some of which were also V8s!

Mine are vibrating heavily at 40 mph, absolutely caked with snow though , made them mega wobbly Mr. Green

I had very similar experience although not with RR it was my Navara 65 - 75 mph was very uncomfortable!!
Turned out to be the front UJ on the prop shaft due to the angle they would wear much quicker than the rest. I changed that and never looked back!! Thumbs Up 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current

So collected the car today and am pleased to say the rhythmic vibration is completely gone. I can wholly recommend a road force balance to anyone struggling with vibration issues. The car still has a bit of fizz coming up from the suspension on certain road surfaces but I suppose that’s just the trade off you have to put up with if you want 22s. Harwoods Pulborough were very good.
