2013 4.4 SDV8 engine failure - advice needed please?

This my first post on the forum, I have been a year or so follower and unfortunately my first post isn't positive.
Had knocking noise from bottom end of my 93k FSH 4.4 SDV8 engine in my 2013 AB.
It is with the LR specialist I have used for a few years and crank bearings have gone and fragments have gone around the engine and turbos in the engine oil. He is quoting £25k for replacement LR engine or £20k for non LR recon engine (supplier he knows and trusts). Needs turbo's recon as well due to metal fragments.
Does have Warrantywise cover but only up to £5k and waiting to see if they will pay the £5k. I only purchased the car from a Range Rover Specialist last June at 90k miles.
So have a few questions - Is £20k about par for the cost of a recon SDV8 engine and turbos?, am I better financially doing something like selling for spares or repairs? or any other options you guys can think of?

welcome to the forum and i'm sorry to hear your predicament..

£20k seems high as on ebay there are companys quoting around £5k for supply and fit...whether that includes the turbos but an email to them should clarify that.. ... - .- -.

Holy smoke, that quote seems very high.

I'm sure you could get this work done far cheaper elsewhere, as Stan says there are lots of companies on Ebay offering engine replacement services, including this one (no affiliation, just an example and they have 100% feedback of over 1000):

LINK TO EXAMPLE LISTING ON EBAY

I'd get a few quotes, speak to the companies involved and get a feel for them. Often they offer free pick-up of the vehicle, I'd definately be making a few phone calls.

Bloody hell. At that price it’s almost worth getting another car. Wow.

Surely there must be a cheaper way, but I’m no expert.

Welcome to the forum.

Good luck with your quest. Plenty of knowledgeable folk on here, so I’m sure some assistance can be had....

a TDV8 / SDV8 complete failure is generally very rare.
the cam chain alone is battleship grade.

But I have heard of the reasonably common oil cooler failure being left and that means coolant in the oil which means bearings will go.

The Ebay link from D3Jon looks like it's viable / worth investigating. Thumbs Up

Sounds horrible but if you can get it done for around £5K and get Warranty Wise to pay for some/all of it then you may have got away with it; good luck!

Got me thinking as I'm about to press the button on a high mileage 4.4ltr AB on a '65 plate and one of the reasons I'm going for that engine rather than the 3.0ltr is because of the crankshaft issue. Though failures such as this are probably quite rare.

Do let us know if you have any further details on what exactly went wrong. And also whether WW pay out under the warranty. All the best.

Sorry about your predicament.

£25,000 sounds a pretty full price. When my 322 4.4 BMW engine was on the way out the dealer priced replacement (new engine from LR) at £11,500 I think, that would have been 2012, obviously a simpler unit, no turbos etc and nine years inflation, but even so. What I decided to do was to trade the car in against a recent demonstrator, as the cost of the engine would have exceeded the value of the car with it fitted, and at almost 10YO and almost 100,000 miles there had been a series of non-engine issues too.

With 2015 or so AU cars with half the mileage available at around £40,000 it would not stack up for me to spend £25,000 on a new engine for an older car. Maybe with a warranty contribution and a cheaper unit, if you can be confident it is OK, it would be worth it.

Good luck. Only Range Rovers since 1988

I had the same thing happen with an X5 a few years ago. One week out of warranty, the timing chain jumped its guide and the engine are itself. £22k quote from BMW and no good will.

In the end, these guys removed, rebuilt with new genuine parts and refitted the engine with a 12 month warranty:

They do some Range Rover stuff, so they might be worth a call.

Very best of luck with it 2004 L322 4.4 V8 Vogue Bonatti Grey

TomV8, that's a user name that rings a bell, did you own a V8 Westfield many moons ago?

If so, I sold you some Westfield Seight brakes via the WSCC website around 2002 !

No, not me I’m afraid D3Jon. Much as a Westfield sounds great, I’m afraid my only 4 wheeled transport in 2002 was a purple T reg VW polo company car.

I think it’s just a coincidence that I plumped for a username that had been used elsewhere before.

Ah, ok - just thought I'd check - it can be a small world!

Yeah, the V8 powered 'bath tub' was a lot of fun! Very Happy
