Another newbie with van



Hi all, new to the forum but not to land rovers, proud owner of my 5.0 s/c Auto/b running on lpg, black and pimento interior. absolutely love it though the misses says I drive to fast! I insist I have to check the kick down every few miles as there appears to be a fault!!!

Chap called Mike Scott at GAS in Huddersfield, I'm a small time LPG fitter myself and run my own bulk tank, but I believe Prins are the only guys who supply the kits for these so my hands were tied, I can buy the kits but cant get access to the software unless you are a prins registered installer, his work is not the best tidy wise but he is known for his expertise on the 5.0 s/c lpg fitting, works flawlessly (so far)

Sounds promising, by the same guy or someone else? I bought mine at 51,000 and it’s just turning 60,000 so early days yet, I shall be looking for someone to service the lpg next year if anyone has any recommendations? South west preferred.

I am planning to do an lpg conversion as well, how is yours going so far? have you had any issues?

Just out of curiosity, can you give us some info on running costs on lpg (I guess it still uses some fuel)

I’m now at 73,000 with it being fitted at 51,000 only issue I had was when the engine was stripped for timing chains etc. It threw a fault up when it was reassembled, quick chat with Mike Scott to reset it and it was sorted, otherwise it’s been running sweet.
I don’t work out the mpg now, I did when I first had it and it worked out at around 18mpg on Lpg so if you take pump prices at 60p it’s basically doing 36mpg compared with petrol.
I have my own bulk tank so I pay .36p per ltr which equates to 54mpg (very roughly of course) plus the the small amount of petrol, I guess I fill up every three/four months or there abouts, maybe longer, I’ve never taken much notice of the time, I do know it doesn’t hurt my wallet and the cost of fuel is not a consideration on whether I drive the range or not!

It still puts a small amount of fuel through the petrol injectors to keep them active and cool I’m told !

Prins we’re the only company doing the kits for them, don’t know if that’s changed.

There’s a fair bit of stripping out to do to fit the Lpg system so it would make sense to have the person doing the conversion to do them at the same time.
I hope you have deep pockets !!

Not all 5.0 are effected by timing chain guides, I have the list of engine numbers somewhere of the ones involved (certain batch of poor quality guides), it’s the tensioner guides that were the problem not the chains themselves, the tensioners wear the guides, as the tensioners pistons push into the guides they wear the alloy and eventually get to the end of their travel so can’t maintain pressure on the chains, you’ll get plenty of warning by the rattle.
However..I know of three 5.0 that have had catastrophic timing chain engine failure, all three were due to low oil levels therefore not pressurising the tensioners allowing the chains to jump so not actually a timing chain/guide fault, just poor maintenance
Moral of the story.. check your engine oil regularly. Current 5.0 S/C Autobiography LPG

Last year Prins were in the process of producing a kit for the 5.0 SC 405, I would imagine that must be in production now so they certainly are convertable. Current 5.0 S/C Autobiography LPG
