RR MY 18 or MY17

My time with my L404 3.0 AB is coming to an end. I have enjoyed the car however, i want to get back into a V8.

I have found a MY18 L405 AB 2.5 years old, its my exact spec and more and only covered 7000 miles. This vehicle comes with a massive price tag (80k) but it is like new. New purchase price was 110.

I have read lots of posts on the forum and there appears to be many improvements from MY13 when compared with a MY17.

There is a big price difference between MY17 and MY18, is the 18 worth the difference, have they made significant improvements which is actually worth the price difference.

Any advise would be appreciated. ------------------------------------------

i think the my18 is worth the extra, enough to make that decision. ok, it’s a lot but it looks and feels more modern in many ways. having said that, £80k is a lot for a 2018 car even with that low mileage, mine was 18 month when i bought it last year with 11k miles and it was £73k after a bit of discount. MY23 Panamera E-Hybrid

Definitely a big decision, but has everything on it which i would spec if buying new, deployable side steps, shadow pack, wooden wheel leather headlining, alloy pedals - it just looks a bit different - eye catching, right colour S/Black exterior the right wheels, all black interior, the only thing i will have to fit retrospectively is the deployable tow bar which, doesn't seem to big of a job. I really like the new technology/infotainment.

MY13 is fully loaded and only done 60k - it was just 3 years old when i purchased with price tag of 53k this MY18 is not quite as old but 30k more expensive. I cant find a 17 with the spec i want and there are few with low mileage. If my 13 was a V8, i would keep it it without any hesitation.

The only thing i'm not keen on is add blue, but will get used to it.

Due to C19 i cant view either, its click and collect. ------------------------------------------

I reckon £80k is too much. It should be c. £60-65.

And also low mileage can have its own drawbacks. Thats only 2,000+ miles per year. Unless they are infrequent long hauls/motorway, it's sat around in-between. If daily use, then it's lots of short journeys where they engine never gets warm and condensation builds up internally and rusts inside.

£80k is definitely too expensive for. MY18. I bought a new pre-reg MY19 SVD8 VSE in May 20 for £73k, list was £100k.

I have owned MY16/17/19 from new and they are all an improvement on the former. I particularly like the seats and adaptive headlights in the facelift version. MY23 D350 HSE

MY17 is the sweet spot IMHO.
Facelift car's new revised dash can be frustrating when you have to click twice instead of just push a button once and the door panels look fussier with the seat controls added.
Only benefit I can see are the seats, they are way better than the previous in terms of comfort if not support when you're driving briskly.

I just don't see the value in £80k for a low mileage AB 4.4, I think they are £10k too much in the current overheated market and I can see a slide once the economy starts up again soon'ish.

I bought a facelift 2018/18 plate 3.0SE back in the summer last year with 7k miles at £57.5k from a main dealer, it's now on 14.5k miles and WBAC value it at £55800.00, that's not normal but I'm going to take their money and I'm moving to a new Defender 90 Hard Top. I'm retiring shortly and have no need for a large car anymore as the kids rarely travel with us.

Prices are definitely stronger this year than last year this time. As spec can vary so much between these cars it’s also very difficult to draw a comparison between one car up for sale versus the next ad the difference may not be stated but very important to the person buying.

If you can afford it then I would buy the one you really want, and nearly always go for the newer model year.

Agreed, the seats are more comfortable the Pixel headlights were a must for me as I first had matrix LEDs back in 2014 and my last car had the same but with laser high beam, so I find normal LEDs or Xenons a real backward step. Won’t be so much of an issue if you’re not used to them though. MY23 Panamera E-Hybrid

It's down to personal preferences and taste.

On balance I just prefer the MY17, so I bought one in 2019. Key points for me where my dislike of screen operated controls, so the single screen of the MY17 was a winner. I also don't like to see exhaust pipes on a FFRR and overall find the MY17 exterior styling a bit more subtle. I also like the 'hidden' storage on the front door cards/armrest. Seats are a bit more comfortable on the MY18 though, a little wider I think.

I went out to buy a 16MY in 2017, but I was sold on the massive leap forward in the infotainment and instrument display in the 17MY car.
I saw the 18MY car a few months later and it’s swings and roundabouts but, if I had to choose again, I would have another 2017 because:

1. My Mrs would mutiny if she was no longer able to watch DVD’s on the dual view screen in the front!
2. I prefer a mix of touch screens where I can see them (high up) and analogue buttons where I can’t see them (in front of the gear selector). The matt finish on the older car isn’t a fingerprint magnet either.
3. I prefer the more tactile feedback of the steering wheel controls.
4. There is no way I would give up the much larger, softer and more supportive head restraints in the 17 AB.
5. I’m not ready to give up on a standard fit CD/DVD player either. If the later car has it added, it fills up most of the upper glovebox and puts it out of safe reach for the driver.
6. The lidded door pockets are vital for me for concealing valuables and keeping paperwork safe.
7. With the astronomical cost of replacement headlamps, I prefer the bumpers to stand slightly proud of the headlamps, rather than flush.
8. Green (my favourite LR colour) went from a no cost option, to costing at least £4,500 😮
9. I prefer the less aggressive look of the original, especially the concealed exhausts and the more subtle tail lamps.
10. The LED side marker lamps were deleted and replaced with a black plastic infills. These are really handy when the RR overhangs a roadside, end on, parking space, or when nudging out into traffic at night.

If none of the above matter to you, go for the 18MY 👍

I really appreciate all the advice and experiences you have shared. I seem to be attracted to the most expensive ones RR.

What is making it harder for me, is that there are currently no MY17 with the spec that i want but there is a MY18. I am spoilt with my MY13 as it has absolutely everything on it. However the comprise for all the bells and whistles cost me the V8.

I have a good offer on the table for mine which is very tempting - another sleepless night making my mind up.

Really do appreciate all the pros and cons you have shared. ------------------------------------------

I’m not sure I understand what you mean there. Are you saying that the spec that you want only comes with the V6?

Whatever you go for, I’d always try and hold off to try and find something as close to what you want as you can 👍

Sorry, what i mean is that car i found had all the spec that i wanted, but was a 3.0. I couldn't find a V8 with the spec that i wanted. When i drove it i was really impressed, so decided it would be good to have a change. The 3.0 has been fine, no issues at all in nearly 4 years except a steering rack due to hitting pot hole.

However, I miss the grunt of a V8, I will definitely wait until the right one comes up. The MY18 i have got my eye on is the spec i would select if buying new apart from deployable tow bar which i can retro fit.

Its just the Hefty price tag for 2.5 year old car. There are MY19 MY20 10/15k cheaper but not the spec i want and don't really look anything special. ------------------------------------------
