Undecided 4.4 tdv8 or 5.0 sc

Hi been away from the forum for a while the green oval as give me the call again like a bat sign.

I have had P38's before classics but never a L322 so would like some advice from you experts who own and run these lovely motors on a daily basis.
Tdv8 4.4 2012 140,000 miles 2 owners full history
5.0sc 2010 110,000 miles 2 owns full history

No rattle on the timing chain yet!! no undue noise from the supercharger on idle on the 5.0, do the 4.4's still suffer from blown turbos and egr faults like the 3.6's what mpg am i likely to see out of both?

Any help would be appreciated

Andy

4.4 is a different setup to the 3.6.... no real turbo issues. Main issue seems to be oil cooler leaking.

Torque is epic and 8 speed box is spot on.

Not been in a Supercharged so can’t comment.

Have you driven both? You need to, might help you choose.

I think a lot will depend on your likely mileage. Low miles, probably the SC. Higher than say, 12,000 miles, probably the 4.4 tdv8. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
Had- 2008 TDV8 Vogue SE in Java black
Had - 2007 S/C in Stornoway Grey

Thanks for the info.
Unfortunately breaking the cardinal sin buying without driving them having been given full video's on both due to the lockdown mileage per year i would say 8-9000 a year i will be towing a caravan as well i know both will do the job and from past experience with the P38 4.6 thor 9 mpg was the norm when the lpg ran out but it sounded like thunder with the sports exhaust on it. I am tempted by the 5.0 but that timing chain!!

9 MPG Shocked I had a 3.6 and towed a twin axle caravan all over northern Europe, average was 20 MPG, the 4.4 is suppose to be better due to 8 speed box and some trickery with sequential turbos. I've just gone 4.4 with an L405, not towed with it yet but its better than my 3.6 on fuel. Getting 35 + on a run at 70, 3.6 would struggle to break 30.
I love the sound of a petrol V8, but they just have a terrible drink problem.

If you weren’t towing I would say the petrol. But you would get fed up with the range, it’s bad enough when you’re not towing. Stop start range is around 250 miles, which jumps to about 350 on a run. It’s the worst part of owning a petrol. Soon forgotten when hitting the Go peddle, the 5.0 supercharged engine should be banned from a vehicle the size of a ff Very Happy

But the 4.4 diesel is also a fine unit and IMHO would suit you better for towing Thumbs Up

My 18month experience with a 4.4 tdv8
https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic44115...p;start=75
I had to get new secondary turbo. Rare job on a 4.4 but all turbos wear with time Whistle
Oil cooler leaks are the most common.

I always check the MOT history of any vehicle I'm looking at as well. I'm looking for no gaps in the history along with no major failures (I don't like to see failures for worn tyres either, or even advisories, shows lack of attention to detail). Couple this with low owner count (dogs change hands frequently) and a rock solid service history with receipts for over and above work and you're on a good bet.

I know what you mean ref fuel consumption on P38's when towing, we had a 4.0 and that managed about 11 mpg towing a loaded horse box, mind you the replacement 4.4 BMW engined petrol L322 only managed 10 mpg!! Latest addition, 4.4 TdV8 does 20 mpg towing the same horse box with the same horses, all up weight around 2.5 tonnes, so you should see better than that with a caravan. Drives:

Turbo issues were enough to make me skip the 3.6....... rightly.....wrongly....but I didn’t want the worry, and figured it would just be my luck.....

The price difference would have to be massive....... and even then.....

Diesel engines belong in tractors, they just stink and are bad for everyone's health
If you can afford to run the SC then that is the way to go for sure and leave the farm impliments to the farmers Shocked

If the engineers had been allowed to develop the diesel engine without the interference of the tree huggers & their political puppets who inflicted all this euro I > VI nonsense on us we would have cleaner burning and very efficient diesel engines.

Yes, the 5.0 ltr Superchanged is an awesome beast but otherwise nothing, but nothing pulls like a diesel. 2003 Range Rover Vogue TD6
