United Kingdom 2007 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Baltic Blue
L322Automatic Gearbox oil

I have a 3.6 TDV8 with 70,000 miles and 12 years old.
Mostly motorway plus towing of a trailer.
Decided to have gearbox oil (and diffs and transfer box) changed as a maintenance item. Up until this time the gearbox had been perfect.
Oil changed, new sump and filter. LR recommended oil was used.
After about 20 miles, warning message "Transmission fault, limited gear selection" It locks in 3rd gear. If I stop and switch off and restart, the gearbox resets itself and functions normally .....for about 5 miles then repeats and locks in 3rd gear again.
Took it back to garage and they redid oil change. Result....no improvement (well....slightly better changes, almost as good as before).
I dont believe the garage has a flushing machine, so the oil change was 'gravity'. Oil level has been checked and found to be correct.
What is the probable cause(s) and what is a sensible next step?
All help greatly appreciated. Bob

Well it's not the oil..!!

There is a thought that if you change the fluid in a worn gearbox you can do it more harm than good as the increase in pressure caused by the new oil will tip the balance and cause problems...

Having said that I changed my oil in the 6HP at that mileage with no issues...

Have they gone through the correct filling procedure, you have to leave the engine running and change through PRND whilst filling to get the correct amount in...

If they just dropped what was in the sump then it's about 4 1/2 - 5 ltrs...

If they power flushed it some say this can damage the box...

Not a lot of help there but you can ask some questions... Thumbs Up Pete

Just one more thought...

You say

LandRover recommended oil, Part No. TYK500050

Was this LandRover or ZF branded oil..?? It is a straw coloured oil, very distinct from the usual red..

There are a lot of oils that claim to be suitable for the 6HP but will not have the correct additives

Ask to see the oil containers.. Pete

I've just done the oil and filter on my gearbox with no ill effects.

There's no way that it should need 12 litres of oil. Most of the time you'll only need 4-5 to put it back in.

Have they definitely set the level properly?

Fill it with the engine off until it comes out of the fill plug and reinsert the fill plug.

Start the car, cycle it through the gears.

Leave car running, remove fill plug and continue to fill gearbox with oil until it comes out of the fill plug again. Reinsert fill plug.

Let gearbox oil temperature warm up to between 30 and 50 degrees (I used exactly 40 degrees) and then remove the fill plug again allow oil to drain until it stops dribbling.

Reinsert fill plug.

If not, and you're getting errors, it could be that the fluid level is low.

I bought my service kit from Duckworths Land Rover using the Land Rover part number for the oil. In the service kit I got 7 of these bottles:

My car was very low on fluid when drained so I needed an extra 2 litres. I ordered these from Duckworths also and they arrived in slightly different bottles:

I've read a lot about "Compatible" oils but having seen the difference in viscosity of one in particular in the past, I tend to only buy genuine oils these days. Especially for gearboxes.

It would be worth reading the fault codes from the gearbox ECU as well. Something is obviously upsetting it to trigger the fault so it would give you a good place to start.

dhallworth - Was that Lifeguard 6 for a different car to the one mentioned in your profile?

Your 2012 TDV8 with 8 speed box needs this stuff:

Very Happy

I'm about to order the Lifeguard 8 to do my XFR and am thinking of doing the 2012 4.4 as well despite it only having done 22k miles as the fluid is still 9 years old. 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

I know Smith & Allan are highly regarded and use Shell base stock oils, but I don't know if I'd be brave enough to try this stuff @ £5 / Litre!

It says it's performance level is the same as ZF Lifeguard 8 and also meets the requirements of the LR part number specified.

Apparently the oil will be to the same specification as the "correct" oil so can be advertised as suitable but....

It will not have the correct friction modifiers which were developed by ZF and the original oil supplier.

So the oil is good enough, it just hasn't got the correct things in it.... ! Pete

I’ve used Smith & Allen a lot and their stuff generally seems to be very good.

My Citroen C6 uses a JWS3324 gearbox oil, Millers claim it is cross compatible with JWS3309 and sell one oil that does both. The viscosity is definitely thicker then the JWS3324. The Smith & Allen stuff is much thinner then the Millers stuff and is like the original stuff.

Citroen charge something like £90 a litre for the JWS3324 though so I’ve been using 20 litre tubs from Smith & Allen for a long time now with no ill effects. Life Guard isn’t that expensive from Duckworths so I’ll probably stick to genuine with it.
