Replace upper rear wishbone bush at hub carrier in 30 mins

Don't know if this is of any use to anyone, but thought I'd do a quick write up, mainly pics of the rear wishbone top bush replacement.
Have read a few reports including the workshop manual and they are confusing especially as some say to depressurise the air suspension. None of these are necessary not did I use any special tools beyond two old very large sockets, some threaded rod and I used a Tippex pen to mark the alignment. It's an easy job taking about 30 minutes per side. The car is a 2007 with Terrain control but I suspect this applies to all L322s at least to 2010.
I'll try to explain as we go. Any questions just shout. Order the parts in advance. I went to Dan at Duckworth Parts as his services and prices I found to be excellent. Just make sure you point out it's the single bush at the top rather than the two half bushes at the bottom.
First job put a secure trolley jack under the bottom wishbone on level ground.



Slacken wheel nuts and remove the wheel.

Next remove the bolt securing the brake pipe. I think mine was a 6mm bolt head shown with my socket on it. Others have reported an allen screw head.


Next carefully prise out the clip holding the ABS cabling at the tip of the screwdriver in the pic.



The bolt head has an excentric washer welded to it. This sits inside the wishbone hole and rotating it alters the wheel camber. I marked it with a Tippex pen and did the same with the washer under the nut. The mark is aligned with a mark I put on the wishbone. Note the ABS cable removed from the hole in the wishbone



Wirebrush the exposed bolt head and remove the nut.


The bolt taps out.



The top wishbone pivots up clear.



These are the new parts required.


The part no.s for the bush and bolt.


Part no. for the special washer.


The bush has an outer steel case. You need a socket which slides over the rubber and rests against this steel shell. DO NOT DAMAGE THE RUBBER!!! My thumbnail is pointing to this edge.


You need a second socket which is larger than the bush for the bush to be drawn into it.

Now put a steel screwed rod or long bolt through the bush with the larger socket on the side you want the bush to slide out.
Put the smaller socket on the other side and tighten the nuts finger tight till you align the sockets.



Carefully ensure the two sockets are in position so the bush can be pulled into the big socket pushed at the start by the smaller socket then tighten the nuts till the bush is flush with the hole in the wishbone.



Remove the smaller socket as it's unlikely to slide through the hole in wishbone and replace with a heavy duty washer. I used a couple of hold down clamps as my rod was only threaded at each end so I needed to use them as spacers.

I slackened everything off to take this photo showing the bush had started to move.


I then switched and used both sockets ensuring the biggest one was against the wishbone for the final pull.


The bush is now out. Note the bush has been replaced previously and done badly going by the marks. Probably be someone hammering on it. Note also the special washer which locks onto the flutes in the thread of the bolt. Lastly note the eccentric cam washer at the head of the bolt.



Now having clean the hole in the bush and applied a little WD40 onto the steel hole I reversed the socket set up and pulled the new bush in.

Now just replaced the brake pipe bolt, the ABS clip and ensure that the bolt cam is in the same position as the old marked one. Nip the bolt up and refit the wheel. Torque the wheel nuts to 103 foot pounds. remove the jack. With the weight back on the suspension torque up the main bolt.
I recommend having the camber reset professionally. To check all wheel alignment including castor, camber and track alignment I've been quoted £60 which gauged against the cost of scrubbed tyres seems reasonable.
After that the job's done.

Hope this is of some use to someone and perhaps give the confidence necessary to do the job.

Also it has come time to sell Big Cry and I like to think I pass my cars to the next owner fault free. Thumbs Up
It's been a great car and it's on LPG which has been brilliant.
It's going in to a specialist for the castor, camber, tracking alignment this afternoon then a retest.
Interestingly the n/s front lower arm had already been replaced. (A 20 minute job.)

And when they have been gone a while they start to knock every time you go round a corner at lowish speed, mine were like it when I bought it.... you can check the play with a pry bar against the upper wishbone...

good write up cheers.
many press fit joints like this, have a slightly (ever so slightly) tapered leading edge, to allow less fouling on 'going in' so orientate joint to allow it to go in easier. if it starts to go a bit sideways, remove and emery paper the hole (stick to a bit of dowelling) and regrease a bit more. mine had had this job done at a dealers and it was hundreds per side. (whole hub off to use 'shop press)

kwik-fit do the 'hunters' 4 wheel align, at about £65 .

johnboyairey by using two sockets you have perfectly parallel faces to pull against as the larger socket is held flat on the wishbone side thereby minimising and chance of the bush skewing. Am in favour of thoroughly cleaning the hole the bush goes in but in a non-aggresive way. anything which removes more than crud is to be avoided. Similarly take care with grease etc any many will cause the rubber on the new bush to perish. I used WD40 in the hole but on reflection i might have used a smear of Copperslip instead.

Does anyone want to see pics of the castor, camber track alignment and if yes should I add to this thread or start a new one?
