Gas Bottle Weights - Full and Empty

Hi all

I don't have a tin tent yet but have a question about the weight of blue butane gas bottles.

I have 2 bottles which i use for barbecue, both labelled as 15kg but I always have a nightmare trying to decide if they are close to empty or not.

Being a simple soul (no laughter please Rolling Eyes ) it seems to make sense that, if I know the weight of an empty bottle, a full one should be 15kg heavier and a half full one 7.5kg heavier.

Does anyone know the weights or, assuming lots of you with tin tents have bottles galore, would anyone be able to weigh an empty and full bottle for me.

Many thanks Thumbs Up

Thanks Mike

I presume its not a simple case of doubling the weight of the 7kg bottle to get to a 15kg one? 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography

Sorry Rob , I have only got the 7 kg cylinders, but I like you never have been able to tell how much gas was left in each.
Now I will know.

Rob - are both your bottles part used ?

I would have thought you could weigh either a full or empty one to get the benchmark - the difference should be 15kg..... Confused

My empty one is definitely empty, and the full one has still got the plastic sealing cap on.

Hi, What you also have to consider is the ambient temperature? the LPG boils at an ambient temp that's why you hear a hiss when the gas is used from the cylinder, So if the temperature is low it would appear that you have run out of gas? say a cold night then at around midday when the sun is out you still get some gas out of the cylinder when you had thought it was empty.
Works out the same for filling you only buy gas in litres? The top part of the cylinder is gas the rest is liquid as the gas is used the liquid turns to gas so the weight is measured in the liquid, not the gas.

Hmmm - so 7kg of gas weights 6kg - sounds like a con to me - I'd take it back & complain Laughing

I guess a fully empty cylinder is the only worthwhile reference weight then.....

The weight of the cylinder is stamped on the cylinder without gas.

I'm resisting the temptation to go outside to check Rolling with laughter

I'm an amateur and only have BBQ Gas - which has a gauge on the bottle these days.

I should add that my luggage scales cost me about £5- £6.
Not exactly “ calibrated” by weights & measures .,
They are only usually used to check our suitcases are within airline allowance.

You will struggle to fit the bigger bottles in the gas locker.👍🏻 There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

If you go onto the red gas bottles, they have a nifty gauge fitted at the top.
Once upon a time, Calor had 'calor lite' bottles which I was told were coming back into distribution this year but that seems to be incorrect. Calor are apparently looking into another 'lite' design.
As northernmonketjones has said, you'll struggle to store 15kg in a 'van.
