Wood clad shipping container

Hi all

I need to sort out my garage for an upcoming project and am thinking of buying a 20’ shipping container, cladding the outside with shiplap, putting a side door in and running electricity to it.

Has anyone here done anything similar???

Jim

Good idea, but may be best to check with your local authority, adding power and shiplap may make it look like a permanent structure, hence a visit from their high viz brigade about planning permission. Big Cry

Already checked and the location council are fine with it.

We have a shipping container storage yard near to us, I was debating something similar, but not sure the width is there, depends on your project obviously but I looked at it for a Nissan 200SX S13

I wouldn’t fix the cladding directly to the container as you will need to drill holes. Will there be a condensation issue in cold wet weather? 2012 tdv8 Westminster arrived Jan 19 gone Dec 23

On the plus side security is brilliant but I found it almost impossible to get one that was still waterproof - seems like by the time they are available to the public they are pretty well knackered and moisture was always a problem but I'm not sure if it was condensation or just never finding all of the water leaks.
I suspect getting a good one will be the hard part.

Containers can tend to 'sweat' a lot and ideally need insulating to prevent condensation build up on the internal surfaces. Perhaps the ship-lap will insulate it enough, I don't know.

A better choice would be to use an insulated truck body from a fridge truck. This is what I've done and it makes an excellent storage unit. The roller door is very useful and mine even came with LED internal lights that just needed a 12v supply to get working.

Here’s an idea of what I am thinking of buying:

It will go on the inside of L shaped section of wooden fencing and then be painted the same colour as the fence.

I am thinking of doing something similar. I just wonder if extending my garage would be more useful. Also there is a difference in cost.

I did find a place in the UK that sold containers that have had just one journey, so are basically new. Looking to see if I can find the same in Germany.
