My New L322 4.4 V8 ('53)

Hi all,

Recently picked up my new (to me) L322.

4.4 V8 VOGUE Petrol in Blue.

The car has been through a couple of forum members, I picked it up from "davelise", and prior to that I believe it was looked after by "24valve".

It looks a good honest car. The Atlantic Blue exterior with the "Parchment Ox?" interior looks great.

No doubt some bumps along the way, but so far, enjoying my first taste of Range Rover ownership.

My nearest specialist is SLR Automotive, anyone heard of them? I may have them give it a once over to catch any immediate problems, until the MOT in March '24.

I'll pop up some photos and ownership bits and bobs a little down the road.

Little update on this.

We've been running the car as our family car for a couple of weeks now.

I appreciated that the journey would not be without it's bumps, so as of today this is where we stand.

The front end has developed a knock. Forum wisdom would suggest the best place to start is the drop links.

There quite a bad water leak. I've checked both sunroof drains, which are indeed blocked. I've tried everything to unblock them, strimmer wire, ethernet cable, I even bought some rubber hose and then tried blowing sucking, still no luck.

Last resort was some gentle compressed air... Which still hasn't shifted it.

I've therefore taped the sunroof shut until the weather improves.

Sadly this hasn't cured the leak so today I am going at the roof gutters and windscreen with some Silkaflex.

Yesterday the Air Suspension Inactive warning came up, together with HDC Inactive and an ABS Warning light. Also the Speedo stopped working. Believe this may be an ABS sensor or steering sensor... Or alternator.

I left the CTEK overnight and the battery looks in good condition, so I don't think it is that.

The power steering also went incredibly heavy for a bit ...

So ... We love the car and it's here to stay but MY GOD this is not a easy journey!

The car has been booked into a local specialist for a quick 1 hour inspection, which hopefully will solve a few mysteries!

Our plan was, and remains, to run this as our winter car, then in the Spring see what we need to do to get the car sorted.

More to follow. I'm determined for this car to remain part of the family but presently it's testing my patience!

Ref the leak, whereabouts is it appearing inside the car?

There are a few common areas to check although it often appears away from the actual source Rolling Eyes Jonathan

It's running down the drivers A pillar, through the light control unit and the puddling under the kick plate where a 2 inch diameter of cable is running.

I've removed the grommet to aid the draining but now am syphoning it out with some of the pipe I bought for the drain unblock.

The roof lining seems dry, the A pillar is saturated.

Classic sunroof drain issue, could there have been any remaining water in the sunroof tray (accessible with the sunroof open) before you taped it up and it’s the last of that water working it’s way through? Jonathan

The speedo feeds from the rear left ABS sensor. Had this on my TD6. I then made the mistake of clearing the faults without fixing the issue……That then caused a few faults plus the car will think it’s not moving when it is, ie it will see 3 wheels turning and no speed increase so it assumes wheels are spinning, so winds back engine power… it didn’t see that working so it applied abs…. So whenever I set off, the car braked to a standstill 🤣. Ended up being the reluctor ring on the driveshaft going rusty. Needed a new driveshaft but I now understand you can get the rings separately now. See what you find at the rear left wheel.

Ah, and that will also make the steering too light when driving as the car thinks it’s stationary so won’t weight it up as speed increases….

Good luck with the leak, you def need to get the drains cleared…. Normally strimmer wire does it but you’ve tried that….. not sure where exactly they come out, maybe try clear from the other end…

Sorry to hear of the problems - It does sound like the drains are blocked. That wasnt something I had a problem with as it only ever came out on decent days and was kept in the garage. We used the td6 as the workhorse, and I did have problems with water getting inside in that - mostly getting in behind the fusebox behind the glovebox, or in the rear amp/pdc area.

I had a similar experience to you as a new L322 owner. I searched for the cleanest example I could find with ivory leather and things like HK, heated and cooled seats, no prior bodywork repairs, low mileage and ok history. I purchased from a non specialist dealer and paid very good money but happy I had likely found one of the best available.

Within a few months and a few hundred miles I had spent over £3000 on it. I am fairly sure the only reason the previous owner sold it was the required money to bring it up to scratch as I am sure many owners get to the point when they say enough is enough.

I now have a super clean and fault free car so fingers crossed I get to enjoy.

I had the car looked over by a specialist (SLR in Surrey) who didn't notice any show stoppers and that it "was a good one".

Lots of small issues to tackle throughout ownership but nothing to be concerned about. Happy days.

MOT is in a couple of weeks so let's see what that throws up.

I'm loathed to spend any money on the car until it gets a year's ticket, at which point we'll start to sort bits out on it.

Despite it's slight irritations (the NSF door cable has just snapped, which will be an MOT failure), it's still the car we go to first. There is simply something about it.

Fingers crossed it remains a firm fixture in our household as it truly has got under our skin... But the rumours are true. You 100% have to go into this with your eyes open and expecting some bumps along the way. I genuinely couldn't imagine running a cheap one like "Mickey" as a daily, I'd be pulling my hair out!

In the meantime, I'm slowly getting my garage tool selection ready for the inevitable front arm replacement jobs. cold chisels and 21mm spanners are on their way. I wanted to buy some new tools anyway!

Small update on this.

I've fixed the door release cable on the Passenger side. Smile

Job was not too hideous. Pleased to advise that the battery disconnect appears to have had no ill effects on the car. I did have an Air Suspension warning pop up, but it quickly disappeared after a short drive. Thumbs Up

PowerfulUK on YouTube had some useful videos on the process.

The cable end was stuck in the handle Censored , so the handle had to come off as well, and then I needed to Dremel it out, but apart from that, the job was fairly painless. Pleased to have an operating door handle again.
