I also couldn't get my iPhone to work through the aux socket (on my previous 2007). In the end I bought a griffin itrip which has an fm transmitter fitted. Works really well through the factory radio. It will also play other sounds though such as your ringtone or sat nav voice (useful if you have an app with the speed cams on!) My Previous RR's!
