Steering control switches : volume

Hello everyone,

I've been living with this minor issue since I purchased the car almost two years ago.

The volume down button on the steering wheel does not do what it's supposed to do. When I press it, skips to the next radio station or CD track. Volume up works just fine.
I took the switch cluster apart and gave it a good clean to no avail.
Fiddling with the buttons some more, I discovered that the volume down does work for in-call volume. Moreiver, when in radio / CD mode, if I briefly press volume up first and then volume down, the latter will also work 9 out of 10 times without skipping station or CD track.
So I'm leaning towards a head unit / software issue rather than something related to the switch or wiring. I would much appreciate any thoughts or ideas. Again, this is not a big issue but I'm curious...

Thanks!
