Thoughts on this 2011 5.0 SC please......

You may or may not have seen my wanted post and thread in the general section regarding my hunt for a 2011/ 2012 TDV8. Having seen a fair few now and not found one that ticks all the boxes, a quick glance at Auto Trader threw a curve ball, a 2011 5.0 SC local to me with 112k on the clock.

According to the reasonable well documented history it has had the timing chains and tensioner done at a local garage (K2 in Fareham) at a cost of £700. It also had the supercharger bearing(s) done with an oil change.

A test drive has proved it drives well with no noises or issues. There are a few scratches from parking mishaps (near side front joint of bumper and wing), bonnet needs a repaint due to stone chips, offside running board needs replacing and Kwik-Fit have done a wheel alignment so I think it could do with having that done again. Needs two front tyres too. Ever such a slight judder from pulling away at very very light throttle. Maybe due a gearbox oil change from Bodsy?

Anyway, here are the details, I'd be interested in the collective mind's thoughts.

£700 for timing chains sounds too cheap, all the quotes I've seen have been £3-5k because its a pain to do. Judder on auto box could be the TC.

I spoke to the garage and they have confirmed it as done when I called out of the blue this morning. Parts were owner supply so that is mostly labour. Current vehicles:

Don't know what your requirements are but unless its got an Indy service history, they're a complex car, I'd keep looking.

Buy on condition and low owner count, one was listed at a garage called Uplands recently, yes it was a 55 plate, it had the best engine combination Jag AJV8/ZF 6 speed box, 1 owner, all Pirelli tyres and looked like a new car. MOT history was blemish free.

Cheers AnotherMutley. It has good history from a main dealer and then indy recent repair history.

Here is some background:

I have looked at so many TDV8s and they either are low owners with bad history, low owners with good history but need something doing - oil cooler gasket/ inlet hoses/ rusty rear arches/ rusty tailgate/ parking scuffs/ kerbed wheels/ damaged interior etc or they are high owners and still the same.

I have struggled to find for £15k a full fat with low owners (1 or 2), complete history with all receipts, no damage at all, no fault codes, matching tyres etc etc over the past year of looking.

Plenty out there for higher prices and plenty of dogs too. Unless someone can offer me a 1 or 2 owner 5.0 or 4.4 with all the stuff done for £15k, I'm going to have to bite the bullet at some point and buy something that needs some work doing to it.

The closest I've come to perfect is a 2012 4.4 TDV8 Autobiography 2 owner car but the paintwork needed massive work to bring back to life, all 4 wheels were kerbed and it smoked on kick down. I know this isn't necessarily a requirement to have the T/C drain mod done or replace the second T/C, but when spending £18k on a car, you'd expect it to be polished at least!

This 5.0 SC seems to be in as good a condition as can be for a 3 owner, 10 year old car with history and the chain tensioner and chains being done and I am very grateful for all the advice and opinions that can be given.

I just don't know where to draw the line and this 5.0 has thrown a curve ball at me as my god it was good fun to drive! It is a scratch that I want to itch now. Current vehicles:

Definitely don't need one Pete! This is purely a "I want a full fat" haha. I have been searching for so long that I think I am getting to the dangerous point of just buying for the sake of it if you know what I mean?

That is the reason for the post, get some grounding from the forum!

Regarding the price, I've negotiated him down to £15.5 informally but not agreed anything yet. Current vehicles:

Ben, as Pete has said, car prices will bottom out again, at the moment everyone is increasing prices on cars because of the shortage of components. I'm also looking around for something to tide me over until I know whats happening with my new car and I've watched everything increase slowly.

Keep looking, the last thing you want to do is rush into something and get a bad one, you might struggle at your budget for now, but when the supply of new cars starts again it'll bring down the price of used cars.

Prices do seem to have gone wild recently. Compared to last year when I started looking I reckon there is a good £4K on top of a TDV8 now compared to then.

My biggest annoyance is being too picky and discounting L322s on the slightest blemish etc. I am being too picky I think and need to chill out a bit, but also don’t want to risk a lemon if you catch my drift.

One thing I have certainly concluded is that if I’m going for an L322 then it now has to be a 5.0 S/C. The 4.4 TDV8s I’ve driven have been sublime but that 5.0 has got me. Compared to my 318d BMW, both the 4.4 and 5.0 are an absolute no contrast!! Current vehicles:

Honestly Pete, that engine Razz Razz

We're in a lucky position where the old smoker of a 3 series can be kept and the Fattie will be my main car but also a toy. Will share the stable with the Series 3 petrol we have too. Both a thirsty as each other. In fact I reckon the 5.0 will be better than the Series on that front. Current vehicles:

It's also the fastest....!

500+ BHP is lovely but I find it's the way it's delivered that makes it special, it's so linear.... Pete

Took me months to find my ideal one but I persevered and one eventually came up that I bought the day it was advertised. 2011 TDV8 in exact colour combination I wanted. One owner, 70k miles FSH, mint all round without a hint of rust anywhere. £16k. Done a few thousand miles now and it's been perfect. 2011 Vogue SE TDV8
