Main dealer 80k service quote

So one of my clients has a 65 plate 4.4 AB which he bought on my recommendation last year - it went in yesterday to the supplying LR main dealer for some refurb. work on the alloys and to be given a health check in advance of the 60month/80k service - its only done about 30k though. He also reported a bit of a whine at speed.

So dealer (who I won't name) came back and said the service would be £980 but. could discount to £700
Needed new rear brake pads (£443.87)
Front wiper blades - £98

and the source of the noise was the transfer box needed the fluid changed and the adaptations cleared - £669.78

He rang me to ask opinion on this - once I stopped laughing I went on to the service booking on Landrover's website to show him the same dealers 80k service is £678, rear brake pads were £198, wipers £59.50

But the transfer box is the one that really angers me - the transfer box fluid is changed as part of the 80k service.

If its a genuine mistake then the service resources need to learn the service schedules better, otherwise its an outrageous ripoff.

He's challenged them on it all, and their response so far has been - we will look into it. Can't wait to hear what flannel they are going to come out with to defend this.

After my experiences with a different main dealer last year (both multiple showroom multiple brand chains) though, these ripoffs seem endemic - wish LR would do something about it. Current Fleet:-

Dealers are hurting at the moment, I expect we will see more and more of this as they try to claw back money, only a few will question them, so as usual, they will get away with it...

Use an independent, so much better value and they tend to treat customers better... Pete

FFS! £443.87 for rear brake pads Shocked Are these new gold plated ones Whistle

To give your client an idea ( albeit an older car, many years out of warranty ) All four discs, all pads and all hand brake components bought for £298 All Pagid brand, as good as LR parts IMO, and my discs do not rust at all. Two years on these parts still perfect.

Use a good Indy, they are also better at diagnosing and fixing faults.

No wonder these days that the dealers have big fancy showrooms, was in one in Shrewsbury, for a mate to pick up some parts and joked with one of the receptionists that the coffee machine was probably worth more than my RR. Whistle Bad news was, she then agreed Big Cry

You don't run most of my fleet without being on first name terms with a good indy and knowing where to get good quality cost-effective parts from - my 2004 L322 has over 200k on the clock and still in daily service.

The only reason his car was near the dealership was because it was having some rectification work done by the supplying dealer. They offered him a free health check and quoted for the work as the car was there anyway.

It certainly won't be having any of that work done there - it will be going to his normal independent(his previous vehicles have been Landrover) - its the blatant dishonest lying by the dealer that really makes my good boil. Current Fleet:-

I paid £315 at an Indi specialist for an 80k service. They even updated Topix. Thumbs Up

nbunney Did that include the dynamic response service? New reservoir as well as the diff and transfer box oils?

If so that’s a bargain!

£500-750 seems to be about the going rate for the 80k service.

Rolling with laughter @transfer box double bubble though! That’s outrageous, I think they assume people won’t question them in most cases.

No to:
'Did that include the dynamic response service? New reservoir'

As they are not part of the schedule:

Check condition and security of seats and seat belts.
Check operation of all lamps, horns and warning indicators.
Check operation of Windshield and headlight wipers and washer jets.
Select the LOW range gears and drive the vehicle 3 to 4 vehicle lengths then re-select HIGH range gears.
Renew pollen filter.
Check tire pressures, condition, tread depth, signs of uneven wear and suitability (including spare).
Remove road wheels.
Inspect brake pads for wear, calipers for leaks and disks for condition.
Drain fuel filter water trap.
Refit road wheels to opposite sides of the same axle (Use anti-seize compound on spigot bore).
Check torque of towbar fixings (where fitted).
Renew Dynamic Response fluid reservoir (where fitted).
Check/top-up brake and Dynamic Response fluid levels and screen washer reservoirs.
Renew engine oil and filter.
Check for debris from auxiliary oil cooler and radiator.
Renew transfer box oil.
Renew locking differential oil.
Carry out road test.
Reset service indicator.
Reset engine oil level indicator.
Endorse service record.
Report any unusual features of vehicle condition and additional work required.

As above, but N/A to the locking rear diff, as I don't have one.

Renew Dynamic Response fluid reservoir

^^ that line there is the new reservoir, and as such fluid. The part LR072550 is £90ish alone hence your price is an absolute bargain given the 10litre of engine oil, the silly expensive “special transfer” oil etc.

We don’t have a locking diff either, but they did the standard diff oil. I hadn’t noticed it called out “locking” I wonder when should a standard diff oil be changed in the case? Sold - Bell a 2015 MY16 Loire Blue Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Can confirm the Dynamic Response reservoir replacement is on the 80k schedule as TJH has said.

Standard rear diff oil change is 160k from memory (but thats too long surely!) . My dealer hadn't noticed that it said locking either - certainly on my invoice for the 80k which was done on mine last year shortly before it went back I was charged for the locking diff oil and the box was ticked......... Shocked I just had a standard rear diff but I wasn't surprised as they were fairly incompetent anyway. I only had it done at the supplying dealer because of ongoing other issues which I didn't want to complicate the warranty claims at the time.

Given its on the service schedule - wonder how many others have been charged for the active oil but only had the standard oil , paid for it but it wasn't done because it was fixed price but not a locking diff, or more worryingly now have the wrong oil in their rear diff. Current Fleet:-

I don't like to cast aspersions on main dealers or anyone else but a few facts

When I bought my Supercharged it had had a main dealer service less than 2,000 miles before
It doesn't have a dipstick to check the condition of the oil.
I have been changing my own oil for 40 years and I know what old and new oil looks like....
There is no way on earth the oil that came out the sump had done less than 2,000 miles.

If you can't check it, do they actually do it...??? Pete

Site sponsors and this is for discs and pads not just pads.

Just saying, pads are 20 mins a side to swop out discs and pads 30 mins a side

I have actually just been back and watched the service video from our 80k service, often our MD starts the video by showing the parts on the bench to be changed in this case I can confirm they at least had the right oil on the bench ready Rolling with laughter

Haylands wrote:

I think they are wise to this sentiment now, the video's we get tend to show the work in progress so parts on the bench ready which the technician calls out what's what and then the car on the ramp with either the drain plugs out or whatever the part is removed. Like so:

At first I kinda rubbished the video's, but now I kinda like them. We had a issue with the EGT Sensor and the video from the health check gave some useful / intresting insight into the diagnosis the technician went through the various things it could be and how he ruled out each one etc.

Also handy for when someone on a forum makes you question if you have the right oil in the car Mr. Green thanks for that @nicksaab Razz Our's is under a fixed price service plan so unusual for them to do something they didn't need to Shocked

Btw.. don't think I am defending main dealer behaviour here, I have my own issues with them Laughing

Really interesting that TJH - funnily enough I didn't get the video on my service last year - the car was in the dealership for 7 weeks - you can read the full saga in my My Range Rover post https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic40798-90.html and conveniently the video had already been 'deleted' when I started to question things.

My client didn't get a video with his healthcheck this week either.

I'm really glad though that some dealers are doing it right - whilst I have a good independent that I trust, when protecting a huge investment under LR warranty, a main dealer service should be gold plated peace of mind - it just isnt.

Mind you as a complete aside, my Mustang went to Ford for its annual service 3 weeks ago - the bill, an eye watering £249 Rolling with laughter . Don't mind staying in the dealer network while its still under manufacturer warranty at that price but i do have a nice little local family run Ford dealership (a rare breed now) - but over on the Mustang forums its the same complaints about the main dealers not understanding the cars and the same call for recommendations for independents - so it isn't just Landrover (but we all knew that anyway!) Current Fleet:-
