Bike Rack - not tow bar or roof mounted

Having just bought a new pikey chariot, it's far too good to have the kid's bikes bunge tied inside. As i'll be towing, is there a newer equivalent bottom tailgate mount available. I've searched here and tinterwebs to no avail, I know there was one available for the 322 but no joy for the 405. I don't have roof bars, and am reluctant to go down that route to be honest.

Yes, i have searched Stan, previous threads are for roof or towbat mounts Thumbs Up

No first hand experience as don't tow whilst carrying bikes but a quick Google of "bike rack whilst towing a caravan" should give you plenty to consider. Thumbs Up Bish.

I like the idea of the A frame mounted racks, but euro vans have longer A frames as in the UK we tend to build our vans up to the back of the handbrake, whereas manufacturers like Adria have a much longer A frame so can take a rack.

There is always the option of a bike bag. Put the bike in the bag. Put the bag and bike in the van…. Prices from a few quids to £500….

They do mega padded ones, too so you won’t scratch the tin tent. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I used to have a MaxxRaxx years ago - mine fitted to a farmers hitch with an old style 2 bolt set up, but they also did one that clamped to a swan neck - both left the tow ball free for towing.

The one I had was kind of a single arm, so the bikes needed a cross bar and were at a slight angle. Worked fine once I got the spacing sorted out as the farmers hitch didn't clear the bumper properly on the L322. So I added some spacers, but didn't want that stressing the tow ball itself so ended up with this -

It was one of these and held 4 bikes - https://www.maxxraxx.co.uk/bikes-racks/pro...rier-black

I ended up with the ski carriers too - can't resist a bit of extra kit Whistle

Yes that’s the one Alistair, you have to make an enquiry prior to purchase to make sure you get the correct kit, I shall await their advises Thumbs Up

The way it works - and not obvious from the photos - is that you have 2 ratchet straps from the top beam of the rack that hook around the upper corners of the tailgate. It needs those to stop the bikes bouncing around too much.

These - https://www.maxxraxx.co.uk/accessories/pro...raps-black

The red part is inside the vehicle and you then close the boot on the strap and pull tight. The hook goes in the end of the rack and ratchet up until firm.

It's a faff & I was worried about the straps rubbing, but it seemed to work.

Didn’t realize that, so they would pull through over the top of the spoiler, Christ that’ll cause rubbing I would have thought .it’ll be 2 kids bikes only though, might make a difference..

2 kids bikes should be fine - they recommend the straps for more than 2 bikes - I had 4.

Can't remember how I fed the straps - was over 10 years ago...

Cool, aye they are just a couple of 20" kids bikes, although one does feel like it's made from iron Mr. Green
