Knocking noise from offside front

Hi all,

Bought a 2013 SDV8 Vogue SE with 77k a couple of weeks ago, and I've begun to notice an easily replicated knocking noise that does not sound healthy. When manoeuvring the car at sub 5mph with a fair amount of steer (reversing or turning into parking bays), I hear clunk from the front right of the car. You don't really feel it in the steering, it doesn't seem rotational but it does seem to "wind up", so the tighter the turn the louder it'll be - almost as if there is pressure building and then releasing as a part finally moves under strain. I think it is getting worse.

I have the car booked in at a local but not specialist, but just want to make sure I go in with my eyes wide open. I wouldn't describe it as a judder so I don't think it's the transfer case thing, but regardless I am having all drive fluids changed at the same time (trans, diffs, transfer and engine oil - former three never been done afaik).

Rejecting it back to the dealer isn't really on the cards right now as it's a pretty unique spec that took me months to find. It is otherwise faultless and drives at high speed very well.

Any ideas what it could be? TIA

Sounds like something on the suspension could be a likely culprit.

Whilst you said that rejecting the car is not on the cards, you should be able to get the seller to carry out repairs as there are legal safeguards / rules in place. Especially as the fault has occurred within such a short time period.

If your local garage can identify the problem, then go to the dealer and get THEM to fix it. I am quite sure they will be legally bound to do so.

First step to take is to at least inform the selling dealer of the problem ASAP to protect your 'Consumer rights'

Sounds like it may be a joint on the front suspension .
Try and find an MOT testing station that runs a one man testing lane as they will have shaker plates
Offer them a few quid to have it shaken and that will show up the culprit

Canada 2013 Range Rover 5.0 SC V8 Santorini Black

I have a knock at low speed when going over bumps, high speed on both sides when hitting bumps, and a wandering front at times. A large knock on the left side when accelerating hard too. Independent states the sway bar end links and lower front forward control arms have play. Replacements are sitting at my front door waiting on the ball joint tool delivery. Am replacing all tomorrow afternoon myself with hopes that solves the problem.

Cost is 1/3 of what the independent wanted and they quoted aftermarket parts which I am using too. The tool pushed the cost to 1/2 of the cost, but the tool will be used again or resold for the original purchase price.

I've never used these people, as I live in Heathfield and have a very good local Indy (although probably too far for you), but these people are on my list for a Waxoyl Treatment.

They seem quite serious about Land Rover's and have good Google reviews.

It's still a bit of a trek for you, but I noticed they do offer free loan cars:

This sounds similar to part of my problem, although the biggest issue I've noticed, is the drive has become much firmer and I'm feeling every single bump in the road - Have you experienced similar in terms of deterioration of ride quality?

I installed the sway bar end links and lower front forward control arms this week. It took me roughly three hours. The ball joint tool was not needed, although I had it in case I did.

I used hand tools and a 1/2’ cordless impact to remove to ball joint 36mm 12-point nut. I did it on the floor of my friends garage without a lift. I needed a second set of hands to insert the control arms into the frame and to achieve the correct torque due to limited mowing of the torque wrench and breaker bar. On a loft I would not have needed help.

I also found the lower front rearward control arms to have lateral movement at the subframe. I ordered new ones and will install in two weeks once they arrive.

At this time, I have a remarkable improvement. The ball joints of the sway bars end links and front control arm were beyond shot. I can move them with one finger. The new ball joints ok my entire hand and force to move them.

I used and will be using Mevotech Supreme components. They may not be as good as some, but they are 1/3 the cost of OEM and I need a price break at this time due to other personal matters. I only drive about 10,000 km/yr so they should last a few years at minimum.

I will get an alignment once the rearward arms are installed.

I feel every bump, increase in tram lining, and the front end feels like it is on ice. Constant steering wheel corrections. Bumps on the passenger side create noises on the drivers side. Hard acceleration from a rolling stop result in a loud bang on the left side (drivers).

The sway bar ends links and lower front forward control arms have firmed up everything. There is still a bang on hard acceleration, but it is softer and much less pronounced. The lower front rearward control arm replacement should resolve this issue.

These components are definitely items I would replace together along with the sway bar bushings.

Thanks! If you aren’t handsome, you should be handy.

I also replaced the stretch bolts as per JLR. And extra $150 🇨🇦, but I figured I should do it right. An alignment will occur once the other control arms are in place.

I will take a few pix once all buttoned up.

Definitely go with the lower arms, they have a big bush at the front which wears with age then knocks, also the D bushes or sway bar bushes are common, done mine and it was like a different car once done.
