Side steps repair project

My side steps have totally rotted out and I’m going to repair them.

I like the look of the permanent steps and they also fit into my mudflaps so I want to retain them but I also don’t want to pay £700 do replace them.

I’m good with a welder so I’m going to have a bash.

As you can see they’re really rotten

I got a very kind neighbour of mine to make me a set of steel channels as he’s a metalworker at an aerospace company and he’s very kindly supplied me with some to my dimensions.

I have measured up the dims of the old steps as one hasn’t completely crumbled away and transferred them to one of the new channels Christian.

I'd love to know where they get the metal from to make some of these steps!! If they were put on from when your car was made that still makes them only about 10 years old. Are or were they genuine ones? Must be made of the same stuff they make the rear wheel arches with.

They’re definitely LR parts as they still have the sticker on.

I cannot upload more pics at the moment as I get a gallery error on the webpage. Christian.

Tried to get mine rewelded and strengthened when I had the TD6, but the welder chap said he actually needed something to weld to 🤣

Went all crunchy and were about to fail on my 2011 car and ended up buying some for about £200.

I dare say you could make some good sturdy ones if you knew what you were doing…..

I think mine are in similar condition but struggling to get them off at the moment due to lack of space. I’ve just looked at your Facebook blog. It’s great, very helpful to me. Keep up the good work.
Cheers
