What is recommended for the FFRR?
Foam, Co2, powder?
And what size

Any thoughts from you guys? Anyone bother carrying one in their fattie?

I had one in my shogun bolted to the rear door but that was a petrol car.

Not as much danger in a diesel but I may still put one in there, I'd always mount it in the boot so that it does not get kicked and set off by mistake or end up torpedoing you in the head in the event of an accident. Christian.

I work at sea on large tankers, and we have extensive fire training compared to the general public........

To me you should ALWAYS have a fire extinguisher in the car at all times. For a car dry powder is the best choice.
As Caesium says, have it secured, so it cannot move in an accident.

Important - Check the pressure gauge regularly, and give the extinguisher a good shake to stop the dry powder settling / caking. Make sure you know how to operate it and the best way to knock down a fire, there are lot's of videos for this. I check my fire extinguisher as part of my weekly FF checks.

Due to my job, I am a little OCD on this subject, I have two fire extinguishers and a fire blanket in the house.

Nothing wrong with that merchy.

All our jobs carry something with us. Mine I've got a full advanced air way kit, burns kit and trauma kit for anything that happens. Kinda figured the airway kit is a bit pointless as if I go in to cardiac arrest I ain't putting it in myself

But on the topic, I've had fire extinguishers on my cars especially the turbo charged cars so not a bad shout tbh

I carry an extinguisher in my hotrod as a sensible move and a requirement of the insurance, but I don't bother in our 2 regular cars, including my ffrr (apologies for describing a ffrr as a ' regular car, as they're far from It!!).

I've comparatively recently become aware of some stick type extinguishers (rather like a flare in size/shape). Element seems to be a particular brand. Compact, light and, most interestingly, maintenance free. Not overly cheap but not crazy money either.

Anyone have any views on or experience of theses babies?

Chris

When I did my fire training, the officer doing the training asked how many of us carried an extinguisher in our cars and under what circumstances would we use it.
Long story short, if your car is on fire and everyone is out of it, let it burn, dont try and fight a fire with a tiny extinguisher in the car. Why risk your life putting yourself in danger, keep well away. BMW i3 Electric Car

I thought Halon was illegal in the UK except for aircraft and boat holds? BMW i3 Electric Car

Aj

I think you would have too make a dynamic risk assessment on that one realistically. If you got triplets that are all in baby seats, sure stuff the car naturally but on the other hand if it's just you n you flick a fag and it lands on the carpet, that shouldn't exacerbate any where near as quick as an engine fire with petrol. Likewise if its a leaking petrol line in the engine bay, it's gonna be well alight before you can even do anything...

Totally agree, I was put to the test with a car fire, I did walk away from it and didn't risk trying to put it out even though I felt I could have done.
I did have a rather harrowing experience of a young lady crashing, being trapped and the car catching fire, I tried to put it out and failed, just not enough capacity in the extinguisher. I can still hear her screams to this day. BMW i3 Electric Car

AJGalaxy, sorry to hear of your experience, Prey to God that I never have the same happen to me.

On larger ships, Halon was banned years ago, it was replaced with CO2 systems - ours have hundreds of large cylinders. As for small craft and boats, I do not know what the current regulations are.

As for fighting fires, especially in cars, if possible just walk away. If it is a small fire then OK, it may stop a large fire developing, BUT if no one is at risk walk away. Bean has the right idea, risk assessment, if no one is at risk, run like hell.

My last comment on this subject - if possible, just walk away, BUT CARRYING AN EXTINGUISHER IN YOUR CAR COULD POSSIBLY SAVE A LIFE. Luckily most people never have to think about this. In my job at sea, especially in very bad weather, there is no where else to go, we cannot walk away. To add to the fire extinguisher, I carry a very good first aid kit in my car. In Germany carrying a first aid kit in the car is mandatory, and all items have to be within the 'use by date' We should be doing the same.

Sorry if I seem to be harping on about this, but this will 'ring a tone' with the members who belong to the emergency services, and many other people.

Hope everyone has a good 'safe' day

Merchy, I totally agree with all what you said and the dynamic risk assessment, I worked offshore for 7 years flying ROV's, we had a couple of fires on the vessels I was on, often in electrical cabinets usually around speed control systems. At sea it's a scary situation for sure, youre on your own!

Woith regards to my comments I only wished to plant a seed in the thoughts of others in that, even if you do have an extinguisher if theres no risk to life dont create the risk to life by using it. BMW i3 Electric Car

extinguisher

We always carry one and one in the caravan. We strap ours behind rear passenger seat, easy access for driver or through the back. We had a fire last year, extinguisher not much cop because we could not get into the engine bay, Sub from Mere fire station said it would of been unwise. Broke our hearts to see it end up this way.

Broken heart is preferable to being dead! All sorts of possibilities if the bonnet had opened, brake fluid is quite volatile once the plastic container melts, it goes with some ferocity. BMW i3 Electric Car
