Potentially on the lookout for a 5.0

After owning our 15 plate tdv6 for around 2 years I’ve recently sold it. During my ownership it gave me no real problems whatsoever and for the baby 3.0 I was pretty impressed with how it performed. However. With all the problems that seem to crop up with the diesels I don’t think I’d want another one. My next one will be a petrol. To those that know. What are the 5.0’s like engine wise? I’m guessing although juicy the engine must be pretty bulletproof compared to the diesels.[/code]

As long as you look after them, they are bullet proof and actually not that thirsty plus they are as smooth as silk and pull like a train when you want them too.

Happy hunting, try and find one with the Signature Sound as thats also worth its weight in gold. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I’ve been quietly looking for most of this year. Haven’t seen one I like for the right money and prices just now are mad! Was very tempted by an SVA in the Spring, but it was in Edinburgh and just too far away. Seems dark metallic with light interior wasn’t a popular combo on 5.0s…..

Awesome engine, it's a Ford unit out of the Thunderbird, made under licence by JLR

Cam chains were the week link but all 405's use the upgraded parts...

I read somewhere that it is the most reliable engine ever fitted to a Range Rover...

It turns the Range Rover silly grin into a full blown laugh every time you exercise the right pedal...Thumbs Up Pete

Cheers guys. I must say I’ve been looking for a while but seems the 5.0 l405 is rare. See a fair few sports but not seen many ff’s

Sports, especially SVRs, seem plentiful in supply. Not sure I could live with the thuggish image though

You are not wrong there - they sound like a blowfly and I associate them in the same league as a Subaru driven by a Scrote dealing and wearing tracky bottoms with a baseball hat round the wrong way. 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

I was looking for a petrol when I bought my latest SV TDV8 however... My wife has had a 5.0 12MY 322 for the past while and if I'm honest I just don't see the point! If I drove hers, it would get only 200ish miles to a tank and just that irritant was enough to not sway me into buying the petrol... And finally, the 322 5.0 sounds gorgeous, the 405 SV 5.0 as said above maybe draws the wrong kind of attention for my liking!

I must add for clarity, I own a couple of loud petrol cars, one V12 & one flat plained V8 so if I want to make noise and go fast I can, in an appropriate car to do so. Thumbs Up

When I was looking for mine, I realised that for me the SVR was a bit like a dog. I really like them, as long as they belong to someone else!

I've found with mine that it's not great on local stuff, 14mpg, maybe 11mpg on a bad day. But long distance stuff which lets face it, is one of the things that a V8 is designed for, 32mpg.

I'm with Cam-Tech-Craig, there are more appropriate loud cars. Wink

Sorry guys. Thanks for the replies. Not owning one now and also been so tied up with work lately I haven’t been on here much. I’ve toyed with going back to something sporty/fast but I just can’t see anything I’d wanna be in more than another L405. Seen a few 5.0’s lately with low mileage up for sale for around the 30k mark. It also seems although our last one was a 15 plate most of the earlier 5.0’s have got a much better spec.
