I bought this car last week and have been concerned that it seems to use more fuel than I thought it would. I have been driving it on average gently, not needing to take it much over 2.5k rpm.

The computer as was left by the previous owner is showing 18.4 mpg, and so far on a full tank, I'm about halfway through it and it seems to have done around 180 miles, so say, 360 miles to empty. I live in a small town and drive a combination of town and open road.

Possible reasons I am thinking of:

1. it has 285/45/22 tyres on 22" rims, perhaps the rolling circumference is messing up with the mileage reading (but surely can't be much)

2. it was bought remapped, don't know what brand map it has on it, but was told that it is a very old one (calibration id is NNS505000) so I have decided to get that taken off and have a known map put on it (Quantum)

3. checked the GAP, no faults other than a sticky EGR valve, they have both been blanked off now so not sure it is anything mechanical.

4. no other faults, eg split hoses as far as I can tell.

5. no steaming brakes in wet weather driving.

Should I wait until the new map is on there before being further concerned?

I have started using Fuelio and am logging the miles and the fuel put in. The only reason I mentioned the readout was because that was what alerted me, but as I said, it looks like I'm only going to get around 340-360 miles out of this tank, which I think looks low.

A few years ago, another 3.6 TDV8 that I used to own for 3 years in the same roads used to do about 24-25 mpg on average.

It's very easy to get 18 mpg average from a 3.6 if the weather is cold & journeys are short. The engine just doesn't get warm very fast.
For interest, zero 1 of the fuel consumption trips when starting the engine cold & watch how slowly it climbs from 5 mpg as the journey progresses 😁

PS The tyres will also make it worse and look worse.
Actually worse possibly as the gearbox won't lock out until a higher speed and look worse because they will cause the mileage to appear lower than actual. Paul,

Totally agree- I’m not much better then 22-23 over it’s life time and that’s mainly due to a 50/50 town/motorway stuff when it’s fully warm- I don’t really do short journeys in it- got the other half’s Q3 for that 2009 (2010 MY) 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography

I was only getting around d 18mpg in my 07 tdv8 around town, was about 28mpg on a good run keeping it steady.
