Get a decent set of cameras with a wired NVR and then you won’t have to pay subscription until the end of time. Cloud cameras are ok but locally backed up is better in my opinion.

Christian - could you point me to a system that I can install easily by diy that is mains powered via a 13pin plug and will allow me to record continuously. I assume it will have to have some sort of storage box for the digital recordings? I don’t need cloud storage but it would be great to access the footage via an App. The camera and box will be in house wifi range. I don’t want to drill any holes through house wall to connect an Ethernet cable to the box either. I don’t want to pay anyone for cloud storage as well.

Hey Rob,
All credible cameras need a wire of some sort so running an Ethernet cable is infinitely easier than a mains cable, so you’re definitely going to need to drill a hole somewhere to get the cable to the camera.

All cameras I work with are power over Ethernet so the NVR can power them, meaning just one mains power connection and no accidental powering down of mains fed cameras when they’re plugged into a bedroom socket on an extension lead - for example.

I just can’t recommend any wireless cameras as I’ve had so much bother with them from a service perspective so anything I could point you to would have to be wired, sorry dude. Christian.

I may have confused things. Usually do
I can drill a hole from the outside into the garage (for powered ethernet cable). The garage has 13pin sockets for power.
I didn't want to drill a second hole from garage into the lounge where the router is located. I think this is where I get confused. I assumed the router needs a cable between it and the NVR box but reading your reply, I'm assuming not..??
I would like to access the footage by an app on my phone if possible. The garage picks up WiFi from the house router no probs.

Rob i have 2 systems, blink cameras and a wired swann system..

the dvr is my lounge and is connected to my router via ethernet cable....the cameras are connected via cable...this dvr is constantly recording and can be accessed via a phone app..i also have a monitor wired up..


the blinks [wireless] are used as motion security cameras... ... - .- -.

If running an ethernet cable is difficult, don’t forget about “Powerline” adapters, various makes (but Netgear is one). These allow you to use your house ring mains to transmit the ethernet signal, just by plugging them in to a mains socket, I‘ve used these for years, and they are faster than wifi “Gigabit ethernet” so good for video.  “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

I run a Chinese-made “DaHua” NVR with 4 outdoor cams, it was cheap but it’s been running continuously fault-free for 7 years, and use their excellent “iDMSS Plus” App on our phones/iPads to monitor it, also internally use Blink from Amazon, which is very good as others have said.  “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

just bought a XEGA 4G cam for £100 off amazon. (Xega 4G LTE Cellular Security Camera Solar With SIM Card, Outdoor Wireless No WiFi Security Camera, 2K HD PTZ Night Vision PIR Motion Sensor 2 Way Talk SD&Cloud Storage IP66)

It is excellent, with cloud uploads, solar power panel, no cables (so stand alone), 4g, L/R up/down scan facility, IR and night light, good range and picture.

Price now gone up to £139.
