I currently have a 2020 RR courtesy car whilst mine is in for repair following an accident.

I just want to check what steps there are to prevent theft, as i know the RR and RRS are top targets for keyless theft.


- Have Land Rover improved the security so you don't need to worry about later cars?
- Keyless entry has been de-activated -> I'm assuming this also makes the risk negligible because the car won't accept a signal from the key?
- The hire company have provided a lined case to keep the key in
- The hire company have provided a steering wheel lock which they said is optional to use or not (which obviously i'd rather not use because it's a faff but, is it actually important?)
- The hire car company have a tracker fitted

I know it's not my car but... it's my excess and would rather not have a £70k claim.

That’s all you can do really l. If it were your own car I would have suggested an immobiliser such as a Ghost or Pandora.

unfortunately my 2018 plate RR got stolen off the drive last week 4am in the morning .

Got a call from Tracker to say they'd had an alert could I go check if my vehicle was still on the drive .Peered out of the window it had indeed gone !

Told them to track it and they reply saying 'unfortunately sir they have jammed the tracker '

So in summary , both keys in my possession ( far away at the rear of the house ) and the inability to track the car .

If they want it unfortunately they will take it ...to my mind there is nothing you can do !

They can pick up the frequency by following you whilst you are out at the shops for example and then return later to simply drive away .

Ghost unfortunately invalidates the warranty ( interferes with the wiring loom ) andy other tracking / immobilising system they can obviously jam .

Not sure what the solution is ?

Sorry to hear. I know they're top targets because of their value and desirability.

Obviously, the usual security lights, CCTV cameras, steering wheel locks, clamps etc will all make a good deterrent and hopefully make the risk too high, where most are stolen from the home address at night.

Did your vehicle have keyless entry active or de-activated? In my mind, this feels like the solution. If the vehicle is programmed not to accept a keyless signal, it makes the vehicle as difficult to steal as any other car.

The above and of course if they cant speak to your KVM through the OBD2 then they cannot write to a new key either!

So, turn off the keyless, turn off access to the OBD2, an old-fashioned immobilizer, and a good steering wheel lock, and voila...

Another option if leaving the vehicle for an amount of time or going on holiday is that you could simply remove the engine relay, starter relay or ECU fuse - a 10 second job. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

as you can imagine the first couple of days is quite a shock and difficult to not take it personnel .However the tracker company say it was probably stolen to order .

But that would mean that they had their eyes on it for a couple of days at least .

Could you please send me the details of how to turn off the OBD2 port also please Graig .Not sure I'm gong to buy another RR after this incident ( but, there is no other alternative that delivers the same majic though in my opinion - so most likely will ) .

Update - for interest

Called the tracker company to see if they had any joy ( and secretly to vent my frustration as to how they can sell a product which is in the event so not fit for purpose - they also turned off my access to the tracking app in the event of the theft , for 'security ' reasons they said .)

Anyway it transpires that the car was taken to a location approx 1 minute away after the theft alert occurred and parked up , 4 police cars arrived at he scene but the car had moved on and they lost contact with the vehicle after that ( I presume thats when they jammed the signal from the tracker ) .

They have had no signal since but said that they can triangulate a location when the car passes past two phone signal masts .
However usually the area is quite large and hence they are unable to pin the location of the vehicle .If they rip the tracker out it immobilises the vehicle so they cut the ariel wire ? ( not sure if the operative was 100% sure about this information ) .

Anyway the insurance company have given me an appointment for some one from their toatal loss team to ring me - earliest slot available is in 5 days !

I genuinely think there should be an Immediate 'aggrovation' payment for non-fault claims.

Such a shame however, for the thieves, even a few thousands pounds on a piece of kit is worth it because of how many vehicles they can steal with it. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

The best tracker is the option which has added protection of VHF. This can allow tracking under ground and in containers plus the installer does not hide it in the standard known position in the car.

Also Police have the ability to turn the engine off at safe suitable location.

I did have the keyless feature on , but I understand they can pick up the signal if they follow you into a shop etc ?

I have friends who have had secondary trackers fitted ,but the thieves rip the vehicle apart trying to locate the second tracker .IF they don't find it , you are then left with a vehicle with extensive damage .

I suppose on balance , I would prefer them to take the car without entering the house rather them breaking in and violating the family's space and or threatening members of the family ?

Don't know what the solution is ?

I have posted this before on here so am ok with it being public.

For years, on all my expensive cars, I have fitted an additional MetaTrak immobiliser/tracker. It comes with a fob which you press before starting. No fob, no movement of the vehicle. If the car is taken with the fob then MetaTrack will immobilise the engine when it is next switched off. There is no indication that the additional device is fitted.

My experience is that the MetaTrak tracking and follow up is far better than LR’s. For instance when traveling on Eurotunnel with the engine off but vehicle moving, MetaTrack call me before we get in the tunnel but LR don’t even recognise the event!

I’ve used the same type of device on several RR’s and other big brands. Never had a problem with warranty or when trading in or at service time. There may be a technical risk with the warranty but it’s a risk I’m prepared to take and to fight if LR are ever unreasonable.
