Gearbox Issue

HI All

Having looked at the previous gearbox issue post, Im pretty sure that my gearbox is toast. Back in the October after about 2 and a half hours of motorway driving to Cornwall I experienced the cattle grid rattle which stopped after about 40 mins and didn't happen again till yesterday when it truly manifested itself. We got stuck for an hour and a half in a proper jam at the Dartford tunnels, just as we entered and actually started moving the cattle grid sensation started again. I live less than 10 miles to the tunnels and roads were clear from then on all dual carrigage way. 3 miles from home I can only describe it as clutch slipping as the engine rev'd but no change to drive speed but it maintained enough speed for us to limp on to the drive. Pulled up it was not a happy car placed it in park and continued to roll toward the wall. I've started it this morning and it still doing the same thing. I did put the gearbox into sports mode last night to change the oil path but no real difference.

I know its a 2008 reg 3.6 TDV8, but its only got just over the 100k on the clock and I have lovingly looked after it since Ive had it including a gearbox oil and filter change in the first week of ownership 2 years ago.

And I think I already know it needs a new box but any little gems and any recommendations for the repairs in Essex would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Replace the torque convertor or just fit a complete recon'd box (inc TC). Wish I'd done mine at 80k miles instead of suffering the judders and paying for regular flushes for the next 75k miles. The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom Smile

Sounds like you have more than just torque converter trouble Sad

Who knew,

Just my luck but the reality is it's going to be cheaper to repair than replace the car

From where you are based, Martin Hind would be the first choice [Dartford Transmissions]. Bean19844 with the 4.2 SC might be able to pitch in with a recomendation as he's pretty local to you as well.
There's also a guy on Mersea Island who's got a good reputation, he was half of Suffolk Transmissions in Haverhill, they went their separate ways years ago & this guy started up in Mersea Island.
Bit of a long shot, but there's a company up in Liverpool that gets rave reviews, a days recovery fee I know, but another outlet for you to think about.
Hope this helps. 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

Cheers mate

It's going to be a morning of telephone calls, there are a couple of reputable auto specialists I have found but thanks for the recommendations.

it's going to need to be recovered to wherever it eds up as it's going nowhere currently and definitely not drivable.

So a quick update on the suspected gearbox issue.

It turned out to be a destroyed N/S/F Driveshaft CV joint. Who knew

They have identified that the lower arms and drop links on that side will also need attention for the MOT but all back on the road and happy for now

Thanks for all the comments and advise Thumbs Up
