(Solved) Urgent help needed - car is "dead"

Hi all and happy new year,

Once again drawing on the collective knowledge of the forum....

Drove the car on Friday, everything worked fine. On Sunday the car was completely dead. Car was fitted with new Varta Silver AGM in August. I replaced the battery in the key fob but no change...

Monday evening I hooked the car up to a ctek mx7 which showed the battery was completely flat. It charged for about 20 hours until it showed full.

In the meanwhile I used the key in the key fob to get in through the drivers door. Interior lights went on but nothing else. When trying to turn on the ignition it shows message "smart key not found".

Upon opening the drivers door a second time I activated the alarm which I managed to turnof by hitting the hazard button in the car. Sound off but all lights now blinking.

Full battery, according to ctek, did not improve anything. I then tried to disconnect the battery for a couple of minutes and hooked it up again - car acted exactly as earlier i.e alarm still on and only interior lights working.

Then tried to start it with cables from our second car but to no effect.

My indy says I have done pretty much what I can from home and it needs to be towed. His only concern is if it is a security issue then it needs to go to LR and not to him and they are literally on the other side of town...

Does anyone have any idea what this could be and can anyone suggest any possible fixes?

As always, very grateful for all advice!

When you did that did you touch the two ends of the battery cables together for a short time? John

Give it a try. It is a way of resetting the electronics. You can't lose anything. Cables off the battery and the ends touched together. John

Thanks both!

Tried Weegies suggestion but to no effect Sad

Could this be a safety/security issue?

Something has obviously drained the battery and made the car lose contact with the smart key.

Would I be able to read fault codes if i cant even get the ignition on?

You might be able to use the smart key if you hold it against the dash… it’s normally for if the fob battery is flat… worth a try. It’s in the manual.

I believe there is a procedure for changing the battery in the key fob to stop it de coding itself, i don't have any experience with your age RR but could that be the reason?

Can you now lock and unlock the vehicle using the remote key? If you can, lock and unlock it several times as this sometimes let's the car recognise the key again.

Try accessing the fuses behind the glovebox and removing fuse 17 (5amp, I think). Wait at least one minute and reinsert (check that the fuse is good!).

If that doesn't work, try another battery reset now that it's charged (disconnect, wait a couple of minutes and then reconnect).

If none of these work you may have an issue with the Keyless Vehicle Module. Other modules on the Canbus can also cause strange issues even if they may not be obvious. Have you had any water ingress or heavy condensation around any modules (boot area etc)?

Finally, is the battery definitely good? If it's been discharged for some time it may not have properly recovered. I'd connect.a good jumper pack or set your Ctek to Supply and try again.
