Windscreen chip repair - Can they be invisible?

Rather annoyingly, having only taken delivery of my new L405 LWB 5.0 SC about 7 weeks ago, while on the M1 last week in a 60mph road work section, with no cars in front of me, some how a stone flipped up from nowhere and put a big chip in the top of my windscreen by the rain sensor / mirror.

I've bought this car to put me on until my new L460 arrives, at which point I'll have to sell it or trade it in, so I don't really want to have to claim for a new windscreen, but likewise, I don't want to be knocked down in price when I come to sell because of a stone chip.

I once had a stone chip repaired before on my L322, and it almost left the appearance of a raised glass bubble, it may have stopped it cracking, but it was clear to see that it had been repaired.

My question is, is this normal?

Are repairs always visible, or was the person who did the screen on my L322 simply useless?

My experience is that they are invisible until you notice them.

It's a real bummer when it happens, but I've not had any experience of being knocked back on unobtrusive windscreen chips on selling.

If you can put up with it fixed but you know it's there, could you wait until sale time and make a decision then? Chances are there will be a few more to consider Sad

That's a very good point, RRV8 SC, I hadn't thought about that.

I guess if there's one or two, I could try and repair first, then replace if the job's not done well Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I have used the repair kit from Halfords a few years ago and it was quite invisible. I was proud of myself lol

Go to the experts AutoGlass etc as soon as you can. Chips can easily start to crack. 2018 SE SDV8 4.4 Byron Blue

I’ve used the Rain X chip repair kit with excellent results, almost invisible repairs even where there was some small cracks emanating from the actual chip. Recommended.

Depending on the position of it it might not be repairable or as has happened to me when they tried to repair it the windscreen cracked its a real nuisance

I have had a stone chip repaired and it was invisible.

If you don't do anything with it you are risking it developing into a crack.

Mine has a repair done by Autoglass. It is visible, but the surface is flat and even with the rest if the windscreen, and there is no bubble effect. If it had been in my line of sight I might have been more inclined to get the screen replaced (maybe even a MOT problem if in the line of sight/area swept by the wipers?), but as it is high up on the passenger side I'm content enough.

If yours is up near the mirror I'd get Autoglass to assess whether it is repairable/an MOT problem and if it is OK just to repair then I'd get that done. Only Range Rovers since 1988

I had mine repaired last march and was happy with that until my AA insurance renewall came today and the claims section said i had a non fault claim last march for a glass repair, i questioned it today and they were aderment its correct for just a repair, i got a quote from saga with and without declaring the glass claim and the quote went up by £70 when i declaired the claim so that's the last repair i will have as if a class claim is going to affect my insurance price i might as well give it a propper slap and have a nice new screen. I have a chip close to the bottom of the screen in the centre, basically just above where the wipers sit. I keep meaning to get it sorted so this is a useful thread. Seems the best plan is to get Autoglass to sort it and not to claim on the insurance!

I had one done on my old BMW when it was 2 weeks old, if you knew it was there then you could see it but otherwise it was hard to see. Lasted 3 years and I soon forgot about it.

I just had a chip repair company come out and do it, didn’t bother with insurance as they said even a repair was recorded as above. Sold - Bell a 2015 MY16 Loire Blue Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Thank you all for your valuable comments - I think Andy S has summarised and concluded, the best thing for me to do is contact Autoglass, but not go through the insurance.

Many thanks again to all Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I though i would have a quick look on the Autoglass website to see waht going direct costs and i was supprised.

Your existing windscreen can be repaired.
In most cases, you will only need to cover your excess and it won't reduce your no claims bonus.

Your existing windscreen needs to be replaced.
This will usually be covered by your insurance company. You will have to pay your insurance excess (as detailed in your policy) but it normally won't reduce your no claims bonus.

If you have insurance without glass cover Your existing windscreen can be repaired.

A single chip repair will cost you £198.71 inc. VAT. Shocked We're happy to give you a quote for any additional repairs.

So Halfords do a repair for you while you wait, its £40
Or for £10 you buy the kit from Halfords (RainX) and do it yourself.
Its not difficult. 2018 SE SDV8 4.4 Byron Blue

Agree with Kot, give the RainX kit a go first, nothing to lose aside £10 to buy the kit & about half an hour of your time. I was astonished by how good the result was, the fluid completely seeps into the chip & it virtually vanishes Thumbs Up
