Which supercharged 4.2 or 5.0

Hi all I’ve read a few posts on the above and I need to decide between a 4.2 2007 or 5.0 09-12. Apart from the price difference of at least £7000 im like most people posting, their concern is the supercharger and timing chain issues on the 5.0. I’ve spoke to 2 independents re this work and neither would touch it which doesn’t bode well, anyone know of a place in the north west or Yorkshire that could do this and a cost? I know the 4.2 is the sensible option but I’m drawn like a moth to the light on the 5.0. The interior is just that bit nicer and more modern and the 5.0 has more poke and better mpg. I’ve looked at the diesels but due to ulez coming over the hill, not doing many miles, and me thinking that RR sound better with petrol I’ve discounted the derv. I don’t change cars often so it’s one or the other, if I took the 4.2 I could save up and upgrade to a 405 supercharged which I’ve been told doesn’t have the same issues in a few years when the prices have dropped. Any comments welcome and thanks in advance.

Of course it depends on how you intend to use it and how you typically drive. Also depends what you're coming from. These are proper awesome big fast heavy old barges. If you're used to driving a hot hatch fast you could get into trouble with either. If you're used to any other SUV type of car they are just better at everything.

I loved both. The 4.2 is plenty fast enough and powerful enough to tow well - and mine was the most reliable car I've ever owned, I loved it. The 5.0 was faster still but slightly less easy to drive as smoothly. 'Twas a bit more modern and overall probably a slightly nicer place to be. The chains went at about 108k.

If you can find a good one of either then I'm sure you'll be happy with it...I certainly was. Mike - MPx

Cheers Mike I’ve previously had an L322 4.4v8 on a 54 plate which I loved and now want the next step so all help and opinions greatly appreciated! I just need to find somewhere near that is reputable that can do the work if needed and then I can budget for a price to weigh up both options

Ahh OK not such a big step then if that was the BMW V8 petrol and not the oil burner. Exactly the path I've trod (!) and each step has been an improvement on the last. Enjoy! Mike - MPx

Yep it was the bmw petrol so it looks like a good path to choose ! Just need to find one now !

I have a 2009 5.0 SC that I’ll be looking to sell shortly, now that I’ve bought my L405 to replace it.

The key factor when I bought it was it had the timing chains / tensioners / pulleys / belts etc & supercharger replaced by JE Motor Works (fair to say they’re highly regarded) in 2018 at around 90k miles - along with a few other items, the total bill in the history file was £11k!

I’ve had a few 5.0 SC’s, the engine idles nice & quietly by comparison to others I’ve had.

It’s Santorini black with black / pimento interior with all the usual Autobiography spec. plus RSE. 102k miles.
