Brake Caliper Rewind Toolkit (Caliper Piston)

Our 2014 MY Tdv6 L405 has TRW brake calipers all round. When changing brake pads or discs, the caliper pistons can’t be pushed back in by hand - unless your name is Bruce Banner Laughing

A one handed G-clamp / quick clamp with an old brake pad over the piston that is being pushed back in works:

If you’re interested in buying a tool(s) specifically designed for the job, you could do worse than buy this kit, especially if you’re likely to do more than one vehicle:
Hilka 21 piece brake caliper rewind tool kit - available from Screwfix/ can be bought cheaper elsewhere. Tools feel weighty, well made and kit includes magnetic adaptor plates (ie round metal plates to cover and push back the piston ring). Amongst the numerous plates is a 60mm plate that nicely covers our TDv6 piston ring. It’s an easy to use and effective kit (you can Google these type kits and watch a brief how to video if needed).

Recommended. Hope this helps someone as had to ask nmj about what tool he uses/ was never quite sure before that, despite searching the forum Thumbs Up

I have one of those kits, it is in my "Tool Hall of Fame". Especially handy for cars with rear brake calipers where the piston is "threaded" on the handbrake mechanism .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink

Be careful on the L405 rear brakes, the calliper must be rewound using a diagnostic box via the OBD port as the handbrake is electronic, forcing the piston back using any other tool will break the mechanism resulting in costly repair. The piston can only be pushed back once the handbrake mechanism has been wound back using the correct method Thumbs Up

Just push them back on yours Mike as the handbrake is in the drum on the L322, it was changed on the L405 for an electronic motor on the calliper Wink

I also have one of those kits. Well, it looks exactly the same but unbranded and about £12 from eBay Wink

You can also put the parking break into service mode without a diagnostic tool by doing the following...

1. Press and hold the parking brake switch in the release position.
2. Wait 2 seconds.
3. Press and hold the accelerator pedal in the wide open throttle position.
4. Wait 2 seconds.
5. Turn the ignition Off and back On immediately. An audible noise will be heard to confirm that the parking brake has been released in Service Mode.
6. Release the accelerator pedal and release the parking brake switch to the neutral position. An audible noise will be heard to confirm that the parking brake has been released in Service Mode

And to remove from service mode...

7. Press and hold the parking brake switch in the apply position.
8. Wait 2 seconds
9. Press and hold the accelerator pedal in the wide open throttle position.
10. Wait 2 seconds.
11. Turn the ignition Off and back On immediately. An audible noise will be heard to confirm that the parking brake has
been released from the Service Mode.
12. Release the accelerator pedal and release the parking brake switch to the neutral position. An audible noise will be heard to confirm that the parking brake has been released from the Service Mode Kev
