Off Road Abilities

Greetings all,

Hoping to get some advice, having recently been bitten by the RR bug!

I’ve started looking at late model L322s (2010 on), but am now wondering if I should also be considering the L320 (and early L494). This based on price, as budget doesn't extend to an L405.

My brief is for 50% city use & 50% for touring / off road day trips. I’m new to off roading, but from what I’ve learnt - the car will need to have low range transmission and ideally the e-diff locker where possible.

The deal breaker is the off road ability. I haven’t been able to find a good comparison in off road ability between a FFRR & the RRS.

Would anyone have knowledge, advice, suggestions?

Nothing wrong with the off-road ability of the L320 or L494, providing the L494 has the dual range transfer box if you intend climbing steep slopes. A brother has a 3.6 TDV8 L320 which has taken him on several remote area trips.

Another AULRO member not long ago was pleased to find an early L494 with the Dynamic pack which included the e-diff to replace his much used/travelled D3.

Can I ask why a L320 over a discovery 4? Plenty more cargo space for over landing and they are pretty much the same vehicle apart from the body.

Useful video - thanks for that.

Main reason (for me) against D4 is that in a household of 2, the 7 seater seems unnecessary. The comforts of the RRS trump the interior space of the D4.
