Not sure anything post-‘63 is worth spending much on.

Pretty sure pre 1963 letters first are the priciest, then numbers first, in each case the fewer the numbers the higher the price. Post 63 are lower, unless they spell a word.

My plate is B1 (to look like 81) followed by the initial letters of my forenames, a 40th birthday present from SWMBO. Years ago I saw my three initials followed by 500 advertised, but as a student at the time didn’t have the money to buy it. I still do the occasional search on it though, to no avail!

There's really very many ways of making your plate fall foul of the regs, but the most likely to get you tugged are: mis-spacing; using coloured screws to change the appearance of a character; using an extreme font (shape or size); having a non std background. There are many other regs but very unlikely to fall foul of them unless you're getting done for something else and they want to make a point. Some side images are allowed, some are not, but if its not affecting the clarity of the main plate then unlikely to bother anyone.

...and yes your retention certificate is a one off fee, but the number has to be assigned within 10 years. Mike - MPx

Stan, didn't you get tugged by plod some time ago about your reg? Seems you was rather unlucky on that.

safety camera on side on road caught me......got a fine which they cancelled because i put legal plates on and sent them a pic..

got a dvla letter through some months later saying if they caught me again they would confiscate the reg.. ... - .- -.

I have never bought a number but have retained a few as I like to muddy the water, I use to love having the latest number showing I had a new car till I realised what a prat I was. All the FF have had the same plate since the last P38 which came with W399KYA, it is a Somerset plate which I like but of no relevance.
As I am keeping the 405 it cant go on the 460 and I have been considering what to do. It is so easy for them to look naff or make you look a nob.
My Elise is S325WYB and I can get S25WYB for £250 which is tempting but a bit look at me.

That’s the odd thing, I absolutely love the original plate on my Elise which is just a standard 1998 R reg, I have a couple of plates on retention that are nice but there’s something appealing about the original plates.
