Instrument Cooling Fan Open Circuit

No fault codes for a while, so just to keep me on my toes this popped up on the IID today. How worried should I be? I assume if I ignore it the display will eventually go into melt down. Is the cooling fan easy to access, he asked in the forlorn hope that the answer maybe yes?! 2011MY 4.4TDV8 Autobiography Baltic Blue

Don’t delay getting it fixed…
When I compiled the 4.4 tdV8 fault log I got several reports of failed TFT display units failing due to overheating,, mainly from members living in warmer countries, but mainly blamed on the sun shining through onto the top of the dash.
The W.M. shows the fan unit and a filter, but I have no further knowledge.

Thanks Baltic Blue, just read the WM and it states that there are temperature sensors that detect overheating and will progressively reduce display brightness to avoid damage. Exact location of fan is not clear, but appears to be below cluster near the steering column. Hmm, time for some trim removal... 2011MY 4.4TDV8 Autobiography Baltic Blue

Interesting, is it this code as I have it as well, although no problems showing yet? B12FE-13 ( 68 ) Fan General electrical failure - circuit open. Any chance its a 'fake' fault like the usual speaker faults? Encourage alternative fuels, use all the petrol!

Chrali - yes, same fault as yours: B12FE-13 (2C) Fan - General electrical failure - circuit open
Seems to be intermittent, today was the first time it's popped up for a week or so. 2011MY 4.4TDV8 Autobiography Baltic Blue

I had this a few times and was also both puzzled by its cause and gearing up to take the dash apart to find said fan and potentially fix/replace. However, I check my codes to clear at least once a week and I’ve suddenly not seen the code for months and months. Now that the weather is warming up again, I’m hoping that it doesn’t come back as a result of it just being hotter in there so 🤞

Let us know the outcome of your investigations as no one seems to have got far enough on here to physically locate the fan and explain how to get to it! Andy
