Gearbox Overheating Message

Hi guys, hoping you can assist. Had my FFRR for around 6 weeks now and has been faultless, until yesterday. Car is 2011 4.4TDV8, 38K miles.

After a steady 70mph cruise back from Manchester airport to the Wirral, roughly 40 miles, just as I got off the motorway I pulled the flappy paddle to downshift. Car wouldn't manually downshift and immediately came up with the orange 'Gearbox Overheating' message.

I pulled over and turned the car off immediately. Checked under the car, no leaks, noises or hot smells. Started the car again after about 60 seconds and drove home, about 2 miles at 40mph with no error messaged again.
Also, looking at the radiators/oil cooler, no visible impact damage or leaks.

Drove the car yesterday, whilst using the command shift and giving the gearbox a bit of a workout for the whole drive with no issues, smells, leaks etc.

Is this likely to just be a random sensor reading or does this sound like something more sinister?

I would be looking into getting the gearbox oil changed, even despite the very low mileage.
It is possible that a previous owner has used it to do a lot of heavy towing.

I have had the gearbox overheat message a couple of times over the last 7 years , appears to be totally random and of no consequence at all as it clears after restarting the vehicle , so i suggest a sensor having a paddy , unless it happens often then i would not be concerned.

I had this problem a couple of years ago, its most likely the main radiator bottom rows blocked (known fault).
See below!

Get the radiator checked out or replaced and also the Transmission Oil cooler.

This is the data from Land Rover.

Land Rover issued a Technical Service Bulletin in September 2007 for "High Engine Speeds and/or Transmission Shift Problems" which stated :

"The customer may experience high engine speeds and/or transmission shift problems after driving for 25 minutes or longer. There may also be the possibility of the transmission overheat message being displayed on the instrument cluster. High transmission fluid temperatures may be the cause of the problem"

In other words the transmission is selecting 'cooling strategy' mode as the bulk oil temperature has exceeded 140 deg. C.

The fault is caused by a partial blockage in the lower eight tubes of the (engine) radiator which supply coolant to the transmission oil cooler - supposedly caused by "depletion of the coolant corrosion inhibitor".

The bulletin states that it's not possible to clean out the partial blockage and that the radiator must be replaced.

Seeing as you’re close by, I wonder if it might be worth you stopping by Valve Bodies UK (Claremount Road, Wallasey) and asking Pete Stirrup if their brand-new Hydra-Test machine can test the temperature sensor on your Mechatronic unit? I’m not sure if they have an 8HP70 adaptor plate for it.

I remember Northernmonkeyjones had an overheat message on his 2011. He did a fluid and pan change and seemed to fix it. Drop him a PM to confirm I've got it right.

Thank you for the information guys, very much appreciated.

I've been driving around for a few days with no issues so hoping it is just the sensor having a wobble but i'll be keeping a very close eye on it.

I had the same message last weekend- mines a 2011 4.4TDV8 Vogue SE with 53k miles. Plugged the obdm gizmo in and the fault code said the sensor indicated a high temp. Strange as I’d just started my journey so the oil temp was at ambient or just above.
I recorded the error code and did a reset. Over the weekend, no other codes popped up and clocked up around 100miles of mixed driving. So far no further error code has been displayed. I’ll keep my eye on it over the coming days, weeks, months....as my old dad who was a top mechanic on cars through to HGVs used to say “it’ll develop, son!”

problem has never recurred on mine, I do think its a sensor glitch, but to replace the sensor is problematic.

Its integrated in the gearbox loom and is not a separate item. changing the sensor would involve changing the whole wiring harness in the box. Big Cry There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Regarding service bulletin LTB00080, I notice it's from Aug of 2007 (and it gives affected VIN numbers). Would that indicate that this problem was definitely sorted after that last VIN, and any L322 produced after that date isn't affected by this radiator blockage issue? Is is that just wishful thinking? I've got a 2009 3.6 TDV8 and am trying to narrow down what parts I need to throw at it.
