Light Burning Oil Smell from Front Offside when Towing ?

Hi,

Recently been towing a 1500kg Hymer caravan . Sometimes, I get a light burning oil smell from the front end.

L322 2012 Westminster 64,000 miles Full LR service history bar one.

Should I worry?
Any thoughts please?

Personally, I'd worry that some tw@t had installed a towbar and hooked up a tin tent to the back of my car....

It may well be an oil cooler issue - are you having to top-up the coolant also?

this tin hat bought a car for that purpose. We have a motorhome, so a real tin hat.

But the car came with a factory tow bar, that sshy I bought it.

Our grandchildren holiday a lot with us in our tin hat, caravan, motorhome and Villa in Spain. So lots of choice.

Check for the known oil cooler leak issue....lots on here. Leaks into the V and down back of engine.
If bad, there will be oil on rear of the engine undertray around the circular crossmember and also in the coolant header tank. Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Yes Dr. ROB

Seems it is the oil cooler and I have been quoted £1000 to replace it.

It’s either had an oil cooler before & it’s simply the oil residue burning off when the engine gets hot or the oil cooler is on the way out & leaking oil. Mine went at 86k, pulled into a petrol station & saw smoke whisping from the bonnet!
Very common issue on these girls, 4.5hrs of labour plus the part. Nissen do a replacement which is about £100 cheaper than a genuine LR, for the sake of £100 I went for the LR one. Think my bill from an Indy was circa £750 but that was 3 years ago.
You’ll find plenty on here about the oil cooler, some say just replace the gaskets (I didn’t) some say replace the whole unit, which I did. The old saying, you pays the money etc etc.
If you’re good with the spanner’s it’s a diy job and the site sponsors will give you a good price.
Hope this helps & good luck. 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!
