Service History IMPORTANT

I have just been reading of the loss of a service history file of an Aston Martin DB9 by a servicing AM dealer…

I know it’s not a RR or a JLR dealer but it made me think 🤔

Many here have second cars and many have modern classics? And I bet not many take digital images of their service history books? So, all I’m trying to do with this thread is to highlight this awful occurrence and to save others going through the same!

Imagine trying to track down dealers that have changed their brand? Or simply stopped trading? What a nightmare!

So, people… Get your smartphones out and take pics of your service books, print the pics and put them in the file with your logbooks. Keep a digital copy too?

Craig 👍

Scotland 2014 Range Rover Vogue SDV6 Santorini Black

Good tip.

I’ve recently started looking through the extensive history of our L405 in contemplation of selling it and was surprised/ annoyed to remind myself that I’ve actually got a combination of paper and electronic receipts and records; and it was a PITA to then pull together. For example, you go into a garage for works, they don’t always give you a hard copy, they say they’ll email you, and then you are so busy, you move on to the next thing and overlook the fact you’ve not printed it all off (vice versa) and therefore you don’t necessarily have the full history accessible in one place… Rolling Eyes

I have a hard copy print out of the service history of my car and all invoices for work done on it in my ownership, insisting on them when the dealer said ‘its all on line now sir’. Do the same with the Mini, whose system ‘forgot’ to send me an MoT reminder.

We purchased a SAAB some 2 and a bit years ago, it had no SH but we took a punt. Car was fine, however managed to get hold of the previous owner. He told us when he traded it in it had a full file of receipts. So contacted the independent place we got it from just in case it was left on the side. They said because it had the details of the chap, complying with GDPR they destroyed it Shocked . visiting from www.rrsport.co.uk

GDPR rules mean most history that relates to repairs or replacement parts will be missing from a dealer purchased car. When I traded in the last few cars dealers were not interested in the service history either. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I dont quite understand as I got the full service history with my car from a dealer and no where in that documentation does it give owners names.

So what's the problem?

Ah of course, must put my brain into gear before posting. What an idiot! Embarassed

Something else is that I have never read any names and addresses on those invoices, dont know why.

But I did get all the invoices with the car from a dealer so they broke the regs.

Just a thought...

Where do we individuals stand when selling?

How can dealers destroy service history invoices with the name and address of the previous owner when in fact you have the last owner's name address on the new log book when you receive it?

I have the name and address of the 2 previous owners of my fatty and wouldn't even think about getting in touch with them, i have no reason to. My history pack is chock full of invoices from everything that has been done to the car compete with names and addresses. I've bought and sold cars in and not once have i ever had a new owner contact me for any reason.

Dealers have to remove personal information by law - they could opt to just cutting out the addresses on every invoice but they just can't be bothered I guess . I've no idea how the GDPR rules relate to the V5 with regards to last registered keeper but likley one law in this case overrides another. Very likley the GDPR rules will be scrapped in the next few years anyway. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

GDPR should be easily overcome by the previous owner signing a consent form. After all, the service history can be an item worth several hundreds or thousands of pounds, and should therefore be saleable with the appropriate consent. (i'm no legal beagle)

My 2006 l322 had a replacement engine at 80000. I have contacted the dealer who did the work and also previously supplied a duplicate service history book. They confirmed that they had fitted a replacement engine but would not supply copies of the invoice. Their data system has also been updated so very little information is available.

The modern V5 has no facility to record the details of the previous keeper.

print and save !!!! current l322 4.2sc, p38a 4.0 hse, x350 xjr, x308 xjr, x308 daimler super8, saab 93 convertible and a Transit. Most bases covered.
