United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Vogue 4.4 V8 Orkney Grey

Just done 1600 miles in mine over to and around Ireland and back. Mainly around the SW inc Ring of Kerry etc. Only issue was a broken windscreen wiper linkage. Really wanted to enjoy the scenery more but the narrow twisty roads meant my eyes were glued to the road ahead constantly looking for oncoming traffic. No better way to do a driving tour though with the elevated position and sublime comfort. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I know exactly what you mean jaygee, loaded the DVD magazine so princess can watch DVDs for the journey and guess what? She wasn't interested, she was more than happy to be glued to the window looking out. Being higher up certainly makes a difference and the comfort is just awesome. The last 3 miles to our log cabin is up hill on a single track lane overlooking the loch with some serious humps in the road and the fatty just glides over them.

Took the fatty up glen strathfarrar for a bit of gentle off roading today. What an absolutely stunning place to be. Last time i went there was over 15 years ago and i forgot just how stunning it really is especially when you travel over the dams near the top. I'd recommend to anyone on here to take a trip up there.

Wow brilliant photos , enjoyed reading about your trip, I used to go regularly to Scotland sharing driving with my son whose not a stranger to a kilt.Highly recommend going to a Highland Games if you get a chance at a future date. First thing we notice up there is the air quality. Holland and Holland Range Rover By Overfinch

Thanks John. We going to book up for next year too, seen another place we want to try a bit further out from loch Ness. I know what you mean about the air quality, we always need a nap in the afternoon Laughing
The missus and daughter love it up here seeing as it's their first time. It's just so much more relaxing and laid back. You not deciding to visit up here again then John?

Do you have to get permission to drive up there to the dam? Looks like it's not a public road on the OS map... 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

It's a 30,000 acre private estate DrRob but you don't need permission. Just drive up to the gate and the lady will jot down your registration and let you in. They only allow 25 cars in at any one time and you are allowed to drive anywhere on there that's not marked private. There are some off road tracks and River crossings you can use just off the 15 mile long road to the top of the glen with the dams. We are going back up there again Friday for the day as the weather is meant to be beautiful. Will take more pics.

Closely followed by,..... the second thing most visitors notice up here is the midges.

Size for size one of the most vicious creatures on the planet!

Everybody has said that seatown, but I've only been bitten a couple of times whereas others have been savaged by them. We bought sprays and candle repellants and not had to use them and we've all been in shorts the whole time.
Perhaps they don't like the taste of Brummies Laughing

The midges are a scourge Evil or Very Mad . Best recommended anti-midge is Skin So Soft by Avon. Has good reports against other products. John

Lucky you Very Happy

Daytime is usually fine but early evening through to dusk is when they normally come out to play. We had perfect midge conditions on Tuesday, light rain in the afternoon followed by warm sunshine with no wind. I got savaged that evening, sadly I was too late in applying the Skin so Soft (standard Forestry Commission issue!).

Ticks are very bad this year too so watch out when wearing shorts especially!

Great photos, I'm a couple of hours from there. Enjoy the rest of your trip.

Thanks seatown, we've had a great time. Looking forward to next year now.

It's not midges you need to worry about, it's these lampreys which the lochs have hundred of thousands of, so be warned of you go swimming in them.

One of the oldest species of fish. Though parasitic they only attach them selves to other fish. The largest species in the Uk is the sea lamprey with them reaching sizes of 3ft long. The smaller species are river and brook. Another side fact it was a favourite food of Henry VIII.
