Noise from aux belt goes away when warm

Just picked up a 12my v8 4.4.
When c,old there is a squeak coming from aux belt, but goes away when car is warm
Anyone had this?

There's another recent thread on the topic.
Mines does this after fitting a new genuine belt and pulleys except for 1 non-genuine pulley. As the squeaking ceases when water is dribbled on the belt I'm certain that the noise is from the back of the belt slipping sideways on a smooth pulley at a spot in the belt that jumps sideways a little, possibly at the join in the belt. I consider that the belt is faulty.

Yes, from what I read on here this is quite common. The aux belt pulleys and idlers are known to wear and require replacing. Mine were done at just under 70k miles ( approx 10 years). If you’re up for it you can inspect the aux belt to see if it runs fully on all the pulleys. I’m not an expert of this but there’s plenty of discussion on here.

If it’s just a minor squeak you might try spraying on some belt dressing but I found that access is quite tricky.

In my case I think it’s either belt contamination, or the pulley unit LR022810 as per the post near the bottom of page 1. Unfortunately getting access to prove this, or replace anything is quite involved. I had planned to start this weekend but just didn’t have the mood to tackle it.

I am interested in that spray Rambling Man. Have you tried it? Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

Common issue. At best it’s just belt slip and annoying and embarrassing as people turn their heads to see what the noise is when driving in the morning and at worst it’s a bearing or tensioner about to fail and leave you stranded. Had the whole lot replaced with genuine parts soon after getting mine and it was noisey again after a few months but at least I wasn’t worried it would break. Tried everything from brake cleaner to belt dressing and WD40 but it only lasted until the next startup. Traced the noise / slip to the alternator pulley which is probably the highest load vs smallest surface area so most likley to slip. Replaced belt and tensioner and so far so good. Maybe it was a contaminated belt or maybe the tensioner was just slightly under spec? Also worth trying talcum powder. Key test is to spray some water on the belt while running and if the noise doesn’t go away it’s a bearing so get the whole lot changed as a precaution. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Accessing the belt and pulleys isn't too bad if you have a couple of sockets and a long Breaker bar or torque wrench. Remove the air box and top hoses, and it gives you just enough room to reach everything, including the tensioner. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

It looked far too tight for me so got the garage to do it as they take out the fan and shroud for easier access. If the OP goes this route it's worth checking the water pump and AC compressor are 100% as it's easier to replace these when the fan is out and they are all 'service items' on these engines. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

According to the specs that belt dressing contains mineral oil. Do you really want oil on your belt?

I suspect trying to change my oil without a funnel was the cause of the noise on mine Embarassed 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Not yet; I ordered some but it’s sitting in the garage. I don’t have a major problem. I get what I would describe as a light rubbing sound which is intermittent. Initially I thought it was the fan coming into light contact with the shroud but I can now see that’s unlikely. I suspect it’s a bearing beginning to ware but thought I’d try lubricating as much as I could first.

I was fortunate that the belt/pulleys/idlers were replace during the service just before I bought the car (I have the receipt)….. thinking about it I suppose it could be something not properly aligned when refitting but again it seems minor so I’m not concerned.

Definitely a bit more investigation to do when I have time. TDV8 4.4 2012

I did all mine a while back and I would only use genuine parts if I were you. I had a pattern tensioner sent to me by mistake and the quality of it was shocking when compared to the genuine part.
I also changed LR022810 because it has the fan bearing which I think is also a source of making a noise. I also did the water pump and alternator because they obviously have bearings as well.
Only wanted to go in there once and mine has been lovely and quiet since.
