So got a charging system fault so before changing the alternator out I thought I’d stick it into Land Rover and get it checked out. They say the alternator needs doing and during the investigation they say that the engine ECU is toast. I drove it in there no problem so I’m a bit miffed about that. Anyway they want 1500 quid for a reconditioned alternator (don’t worry I’ll get a new denso one for 200 delivered the the ME) but they also want 3100 quid for a new engine ECU. Note I’m in the Middle East and the prices are eye watering. Question is getting a used ECU and coding it to the car possible with IDD or is it a Land Rover only gig. It’s a 2011 5.0 SC. Current

How / why did they diagnose the ECM is faulty? Are they saying the charging problem is because of, or caused the ECM fault?

I think you need to be quite assertive and get them to explain/justify what is needed and why. What was your original fault & symptoms?

Which dealership BTW? your location was in 'my region' some years ago.

Yes will be getting a full report from them on Monday, it’s in Land Rover Al Garhoud service Centre Dubai. Would happily take recommendations on an alternative garage. Current
