I am not an expert, but if the noise is not coming from the pulleys / tensioners / belts area, try listening with a long steel rod placed on various parts of the engine and your ear ( Obviously not too near moving parts !! )

Could be the fan. Can you rock the blades? Engine stopped obviously. |

Going to get a stethoscope and I was thinking about the fan being an issue as it doesn’t do the loud jet sound on start up anymore and it’s much worse now it’s colder 2012 Range Rover Westminster 4.4 TDV8

A big screwdriver works very well as the tip can be moved small distances to find the exact spot and the end of the handle doesn't poke holes in one's ear. |

Agreed, don’t waste money on a stethoscope, a large / long screwdriver is just, if not more effective + can be used for its intended purpose also |

That does sound plasticky. I agree with the above about checking the fan for play or obstructions.
