Germany
Underbody Panels

Evening all! On a routine dig around under the 4.4 TDV8 to check for filth, leaks, rodents, activists and so on, it dawned on me that my car is missing its underbody panels/splash guards etc. I bought the car over a year ago and never really thought about it before. The former owner drew a blank assuming they were left at some workshop he visited over the years.

With the salty winter wonderland about to descend on Europe, I suppose I’d better get the old girl covered up again down there.

My problem: part numbers / used items etc. Can’t seem to find anything.

Any ideas? I’m based in Germany between Cologne and Frankfurt these days, not many RR”s around these parts and even less specialists/dealers.

The only item down there is the metal gearbox protection. Otherwise she’s butt naked! How many panels should I have?

Thanks for your help! -------------------------

Most of them seem to trap more salt than they repel...

Leave them off and jet wash the underside frequently is my advice...

Use something like this...

This is my opinion and not any criticism or contradiction of Pete's opinion Thumbs Up
IMO undertrays are essential on modern cars to protect the numerous engine electronic and smaller mechanical parts from water (saltwater in winter) spray. Older cars with basic engines were not so sensitive in this regard and also used airflow over the sump as their only oil cooling system. Conversely a shield will reduce airflow over the engine during warmup which speeds up the engine (Especially the engine oil) reaching operating temps and cutting fuel consumption and emissions (a bit). They also act as sound proofing so the engine noise as experienced outside the car when stationary is less. Lastly manufacturers wouldn't fit them if they didn't need to and could save a few £. Mine ( the larger one ) was missing when I bought mine and I quickly replaced it for all of the above reasons. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

My take, influenced by my climate, is that the multitude of shields starting behind the gearbox is to keep engine and exhaust heat off the floor to keep the floor cooler, although I doubt that the vehicle design took our climate into consideration so I'm probably off the mark.

As for the engine accoustic cover, I consider that it retains excessive radiator and direct engine heat that causes deterioration of the cooling system plastic components and hoses. Mine's cover will never be refitted whilst I own the vehicle.

GraemeS, I had a Granada Cosworth and the engine cover was described as an 'Engine Beautification Cover' so you have a valid point.

Engine top covers for diesels are definitely to reduce the noise esp the cold start 'clatter' 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Interesting topic. I put my bottom shields back after work but the top engine cover is still off.

Reading the above about heat I might leave it off, the only difference I can see is that supercharger is louder.
