Sometimes it never rains...it pours.

I've just finished diagnosing a battery drain issue, and was thinking everything was o.k with the world when today, towing a light box trailer back from the tip, the box dropped down a gear (was on a slight incline) and suddenly started screeching and then I lost a bit of drive.

I managed to glide to a layby and waited for it to cool down - checked with diagnostics and no faults. Restarted and I have no drive at all in reverse and what feels like a massively slipping clutch in Drive. I've had it recovered home.

Irritatingly, the recovery guy left it right in the road, facing the wrong way, so I've tried to tow it slightly in reverse, but it appears locked (like its in gear). I can just about push it forward though.

No doubt I have a catastropic failure, but what would cause it to lock up so It wont move backwards? Is there a way to free it off so I can at least put it in the driveway out of the way.

There was/is a procedure to allow it to be towed, but I cant remember what it is.

As an aside from that - if I got the gearbox out, is there any recommendations on places to get it refurbed and a new torque converter? - I'm in Cornwall, but happy to travel with the gearbox somewhere.

From the handbook:

Handbrake applied turn ignition to position II
Place gear lever in "N"
Turn ignition to position 0
Insert fuse (5 amps) into position 37 passenger compartment fuse box
Turn the ignition key to position II. The transfer box will automatically select "Transfer Neutral" - Wait until the message central displays "TRANSFER NEUTRAL"
Place the gear lever in P "Park"
Turn the ignition to Position I- DO NOT turn the ignition to position "0"
Note: The transmission gearbox is now in neutral and the steering lock is off.
Release handbrake
The vehicle MUST remain in this condition whilst being towed on all four wheels.
If required the ignition can be turned to position II to operate brake lights and indicators

TOWING FOR RECOVERY
Most vehicle recovery specialists will load your
vehicle onto a trailer - this is the recommended
method. However, if it is necessary to recover
the vehicle by towing with all four wheels on the
ground, observe the following procedure:
Towing the vehicle on four wheels
WARNING
ALWAYS adhere to the following procedure
when towing the vehicle with all four wheels
on the ground. Failure to do so could result in
unintended vehicle movement or
unanticipated vehicle conditions.
When preparing to tow the vehicle on four
wheels, it is essential that neutral is selected
on the transfer gearbox - before attempting to
select transfer neutral, ensure that the
handbrake is properly and securely applied.
1. Secure the towing attachment from the
recovery vehicle to the front towing eye of
the vehicle to be recovered (see ‘TOWING
EYES’, page 214).
2. With the handbrake applied, insert the
starter key and turn it to position ‘II’.
3. Place the gear lever in ‘N’ (neutral).
4. Turn the starter switch to position ‘0’.
5. Insert a fuse (5 amps) into position 37 of
the passenger compartment fuse box (see
‘PASSENGER COMPARTMENT FUSE
BOX’, page 218).
6. Turn the starter switch to position ‘II’. The
transfer gearbox will automatically select
transfer neutral - wait until the message
centre displays ‘TRANSFER NEUTRAL’.
7. Place the gear lever in ‘P’ (park).
8. Turn the starter switch to position ‘I’ (DO
NOT turn the starter switch to position ‘0’).
NOTE: The transfer gearbox is now in
neutral and the steering wheel is unlocked.
The vehicle MUST remain in this condition
whilst being towed on all four wheels.
9. If required, the starter switch may be
turned to position ‘II’, to operate the brake
lights and direction indicators.
10. Release the handbrake before towing the
vehicle.
WARNING
DO NOT remove the key or turn the starter
switch to position ‘0’ while the vehicle is in
motion.
Without the engine running, the brake servo
and power steering pump cannot provide
assistance; greater effort will therefore be
required to operate the brake pedal and turn
the steering wheel. Longer stopping
distances will also be experienced.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Your vehicle has permanent four-wheel
drive and is fitted with a steering lock. The
following instructions must be carried out
carefully to prevent damage to the vehicle.
Leaving the starter switch in position ‘I’ or
‘II’ for extended periods may drain the
vehicle battery. John

Thanks All. Managed to get it to freewheel with the transfer box in neutral, so thats good.

I've now got to find someone to repair it all.

hi there old thread i know but my gearbox is on the blink (slipping in all gears) i live in plymouth just wanted to know if you managed to find a good plce to sort out the gearbox ?
