2010 4.4TDV8 canbus / electrical problem

Hi all,

Back in a Range Rover after many years in lesser cars Wink

Picked up a 2010 TDV8 in Southampton last Thursday and brought it back home to Northern Ireland very pleased with myself. Car was running and driving well.

The next day . . . driving fine and suddenly a whole host of error messages on the dash - engine management, gearbox, abs, basically everything you can think of. The engine also cut out which from my research so far seems to be unusual.

Current situation is car is not recognising key unless it is held to the sensor under the dash, and even then if the ignition comes on it will not even try to fire up.

I have been fortunate enough to find a mechanic to look at the car in between current jobs rather than the usual 4 - 6 week lead time for a slot. We know the one of the canbus networks is down (I think it was the medium speed) but my question related to what specifically would cut the engine while it was running, or has anyone experienced this exactly failure mode before?

Of course now I am under time pressure to get the car fixed and see if it truly is a 'good' one or if I need to think about returning the car to the dealer. Also considering getting in touch with the old owner to see of he had any similar issues.

Thanks all,
Alan

The recovery guy tried a jump pack onto battery, no joy, did not register the key etc. Have also tried the spare key and exact same problem.

Sounds like a dead battery to me as well which could also be caused by a failed alternator. A replacement battery is not that expensive (cheaper than a trip back to the dealer) and even if the battery was 'OK' it would have been wise to replace it as a new owner. Also replace the batteries in the keys. Replacing the alternator is a bit more involved but not beyond a competent mechanic/ garage. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Just don't fit a new battery before checking out the alternator as the main rectifier diodes often go short circuit draining the battery very quickly.

Really common on the 4.4 TDV8 for the alternator to fail and drain the battery.

If you have a smart charger, you can let it recover the battery (please disconnect from the car) and then use the battery to get it started. The right smart charger can also test the alternator. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8
