Used car export to France VAT question-

Hi All,

I have found a used car (VW T6 Camper at a dealer) that is advertised as VAT qualifying (eg 45k + VAT).

I will be taking it to France and registering it there (during registration I will be paying VAT in France).

Do I have to pay the VAT and then claim it back, or can I export it straight away and not pay VAT? Or is this not possible at all?

Whatever I buy I will pay VAT in France, so if I can save the VAT in the UK it will be a bonus.

Thanks!

My reading is that if you are buying from a dealer in UK you should advise them that the car is for immediate export and VAT should not be charged.

For France you will need a Form 846 and may be liable for 10% customs and 20% TVA.

You haven’t said how old the VW is but you will be aware that if less than 6months old and has completed less than 6000km it is classed as new.

It’s important to avoid VAT in UK as it is very difficult to recover it from HMRC.

Great detail Weegie, much appreciated.

The camper is a 2015 so wont be classed as new.

I already registered the FF here, so am OK with the usual process (well, the man who I paid to do the paperwork is Rolling with laughter ), but I have never had to deal with VAT like this before.

Reading google it says some dealers will want you to pay the VAT and then claim it back, which as you point out is probably a nightmare.

Are dealers used to selling car VAT free? Should they be aware of how it all works?

I suppose the answer is “depends on the dealer”

This UK Govt site should give you some answers:

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/vat-on-goods-e...notice-703

Something to wave in front of the dealer if not aware.
