oil cooler replacement how to?

Mine has been emitting fumes for a while but has progressed to dripping oil on the drive so I'm going to have to sort it.

From what I've read the L405 is a bit more involved than the L322. what else actually has to come off and how long does it take roughly? the manual I've found only shows removing the actual cooler unit. Current

Decided to take the plunge and do it myself and save a fortune....or so I thought.

Wipers off
Scuttle off
sound deadening / heat shield off at the rear of the engine

The rest is same as as L322 but once started you can see what needs to be removed. It looks a big job but it isn't.

My issue was I found a coolant leak while I was in there.....the plastic elbow in the top of the thermostat housing had turned to cheese. it was weeping but once touched literally crumbled Censored

Not the best situation to be in @ 11:30 on a saturday morning needing a dealer only part. The local stealers pointed me at another branch not a million mile away from my brothers so I sent him round before they closed only to be told they had the part but it was reserved for a job. Censored Censored Censored Censored

Not happy but nothing I could do, I bodged an elbow together to make the car movable as like a tit I'd blocked my 911 in so was stuck. ordered the elbow again from my local stealer to arrive tuesday.

Tuesday came no phone call so rang them to be told it was on back order and so was it's parent part with no lead time other than end of Jan at the earliest Censored

After some frantic ringing round various garages / parts suppliers I managed to find a complete thermostat housing 15 mile away....Ended up paying just short of £70 for a big bundle of pipes / housing / sensor just to rob a small elbow off it Big Cry

And to top it off the Mrs' evoque has decided to start leaking haldex fluid from the pinion seal Censored

Why do things never break in the summer when it is nice and warm and dry? Current

Fair play to all those doing this job themselves. Had mine replaced early last year. From memory wasn't hugely expensive at the independent I use, although I did provide the parts.

The part number on the pic is all I required or actually more than I required, it comes with the rubber pipe, I just needed the elbow. I've ended up with everything in that diagram.

as far as a guide goes it really is self explanatory once you start

wipers off
plastic scuttle panels off
remove the 2 strut braces
this then allows you to remove the sound deadening / heat shield

(You'll now be at a point where there's plenty of L322 guides if you do get stuck)

Remove the engine cover
remove the inlet:

2 brackets either side to unbolt which hold pipework
undo the 4 hoses and slide them inwards
remove inlet mounting bolts, couple at the rear then 4 on a big plate at the front (some pipe / cable clips on this also)
remove 2 bolts from EGR pipe (engine side)
unlpug MAP sensor and unclip pipes / cables from throttle body
unplug throttle body and remove inlett pipe securing clip

The inlet should now wiggle out in one big lump. (careful on the elbow on the thermostat housing)

The oil cooler will is now staring you in the face.

swap it over and fit in reverse.

You may also need extra .....
O rings for the pipe at the rear (common to leak if it isn't the cooler itself causing the issue) I'D REPLACE THESE REGARDLESS AFTER READING SOME OF THE THREADS ON HERE
I appear to have got away with the water feed to the oil cooler (rubber seal inside the push fit can leak)
EGR pipe metal gakset (I've got away with re using that aswell)

Mine broke too but i could not locate a part number and needed the car back on the road. so i doctored a fix.

I removed the plastic pipe that joins it and replaced it with a normal rubber hose. I removed the fitting and added one of these pipe connectors

No leaks and better than the original. Oh i also did away with the standard pipe clamps and replaced with jubilee ones 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current

Same pipe just opposite end, god knows why they've paid someone to come up with this invention when barbed fittings and jubilee clips have done the same job for the last century+

I now have the exact same problem oil cooler been replaced at garage they noticed a slight weep from the thermostat housing water outlet part number LR110459 managed to get this eventually but then the elbow broke off the water outlet connection part number LR036058 and we cannot get this anywhere on back order apparently this is for the whole assembly and I only need the elbow.Cheers for the part number for the hose with elbow only but can't get this anywhere so other alternative is to buy another make vehicle similar hose with the same end elbow connectors we have found the same end elbow connector on a Range Rover 5.0 V8 bleed hose see image
