United Kingdom 2016 Range Rover Autobiography SDV8 Mariana Black

Being an intranet and tech consultant I am up to speed with all this 'black magic' interweb malarky...

I just don't see any options in the car to connect it to my iphones hotspot or indeed to use my BT Home broadband should I wish to do any software updates..

I do have the sim slot under the dash but there is no sim in it - so I assume for the basic telematics app I don't need one as it worked before (unless someone stole the sim) Shocked Ash

If by basic telematics you mean remote start, journey history, locked status, remote lock/unlock, etc. via the InControl app, then you do need a valid data SIM in the centre cubby slot, or the vehicle needs to be connected to a valid WiFi network. The secure tracker is different.

I may be completely misunderstanding the problem here though. FFRR SDV8 Autobiography

You are correct James - I mean using the phone app to lock/unlock the car, start the FBH on cold days remotely etc etc.

I'm not aware that I ever had a sim installed in the car (the slot for mine is under the drivers dash behind the OBD port) and have never had a bill to pay for a data plan - All I paid is the one time 2 year subscription to the inControl remote service - I've just pulled out the sim holder and there is no sim in there.

I do know the system used to work, shortly after I transferred the car to my name with LR after purchase. It then went back to the garage for some work a few weeks later.

I didn't use the app for a while afterwards but it never worked since that time - So you are suggesting that I do in fact require a sim to be installed?

If so, do you guys have a monthly data plan.? Ash

I should point out my ICE is 2017+ so may be different to yours. But I just bought a 12 month data sim on Three network off Amazon. Like this

Three Mobile Pay As You Go Mobile Broadband 12 GB data SIM https://amzn.eu/d/9vU9wr2

I also pay for the InControl subscription service.

Please don’t rush to buy this just on my advice though! It may be something much different especially if you have older ICE. But I do have to admit I can’t see how on earth your vehicle would be able to communicate with the app if it has neither a valid SIM or an active Wi-Fi connection…. FFRR SDV8 Autobiography

mine wont connect to the internet even via my phone, I have the relevant subscription. tried SIM cards that I know work and have data, and tether it to my phones data but I cant access live maps/traffic, or my in control remote route planner app as I cant register my car. It wont connect to my house wifi. I took it to the dealers and they are still waiting for the module which is on back order. No ETA First time FFRR owner

What a bummer Arch..

As I wrote before, ask the dealer to replace the battery of the TCU-unit.
For me it solved all problems.

It is a backup battery. The same function as in a motherboard of a pc. I-pace First Edition Santorini & 2nd car Mazda MX-30 Advantage red/black

Did a quick search. It seems a straight forward job. Rolling with laughter
This is a TCU battery replacement on Youtube there are others so do a search.
Some further Q&A in the notes of the video. It is a Discovery so the TCU location might be different to a FFRR.

OK - So I migght jus give up now.

I've replaced the TCU Battery, added my phone sim and checked that the car had wifi (so I know that works).... nothing changed though...

The only thing I didnt do was pull the old one out and leave ot for 10 mins.... hope thats not an issue

I suspect its a dealer thing now... Ash

Taking the old one out.. .. let the car go to sleep..

Come back the next day, put the new simcard in (DATA SIM, NOT A PHONE SIMCARD !!).

Sorry to say. You car is 2016. So 3G. That's dead for years now..

But then you should still be able to pass through the wifi of the car.. I-pace First Edition Santorini & 2nd car Mazda MX-30 Advantage red/black

Thanks again Dan

Are you saying a phone sim with data will NOT work for the telematics

I don’t want Wi-Fi or anything else - it’s simply for my InControl app to be able to communicate with the car to see it’s location, turn on remote heating etc etc

Thanks Ash

Hi Ash,

Your car is 2016. So the telematics are 3G. And that doesn't work anymore.

I'm not sure about 'remote' . I need to pay for a subscription to use that !

So maybe its better to contact the service manager of JLR near your home,

or where you normally take your car in. Explain the question, and ask if you

can get 'remote' to work through WiFi when the connectivity module is only 3G.

I expect they can check that on the basis of your VIN-number.

If it can't work, you don't need to bother with a subscription either.

Are you registered with " https://incontrol.landrover.com " ?

Since there you can prolong the subscribtions. I assume if you can

not prolong it, the should mention it there.

But anyway : do not prolong before you are sure it will work... I-pace First Edition Santorini & 2nd car Mazda MX-30 Advantage red/black

Thanks Dan

I’ll check with LR because if the 2016 MY only supports 3G and that has been deprecated then I doubt it will work anyway. Checking online and 3G seems to still be active until 2024 on most networks however.

I do have an InControl account and another 12 months of my subscription to run. Ash

3G is still active across the UK and I'd suspect the decommissioning deadline will be extended, as so many remote systems still rely on it but that's just my opinion.

I added a link to a data-only SIM above, the same one that's working in mine. FFRR SDV8 Autobiography
