4.4TDV8 Buyers guide

Good evening all,

Is there a specific buyers guide for the L322 4.4TDV8? What things are there to look for vs. the TD6?

I seem to recall a turbo drain modification being required, how do you check it’s done?

Many thanks,

It’s only required if it smokes. Some never need it. Mines fine.

Main issue is the oil cooler leaking oil down the back of the engine…. And mixing with coolant if left… so check no oil in coolant.

I’m sure there was another post somewhere with further comments.

As you already own and are familiar with the L322 there are only a few additional common issues with the later 4.4TDV8;
Oil leak from the oil cooler - easy to spot looking under the car and for oil in the coolant header
AC compressor failure - harder to spot in cold weather.
Front belts tensioner and pulleys - noise on cold start and belt running off the tensioner centreline
For teh rest just plug in your GAP IID tool and run a scan after a run to see what comes up. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Sorry to open this up again!

SWMBO has been looking at various vehicles, but has asked the question is a 105,000 mile 4.4 tdv8 L405 better than a 70,000 mile L322 4.4TDV8? As they are similar prices !

I’m not sure in my own mind, so thought I’d ask the experts!👍 L322 TD6 2003

I think no matter what replies you get to that question, you will have to drive both and make your own mind up…. Taking replies into account obviously, but there are folk that go to a 405 and love it, folk not sure, folk that wish they had kept the L322 and folk that sell their L405 and get another L322…

The 405 is all aluminium, lighter, faster, more fuel efficient…. Sounds like Steve Austin 🤣, but some say it feels less of an occasion and more like a car…..

The boots smaller, and the front door opening is a bit tighter so if you are tall, you will have to duck more….

But then you can get an opening panoramic roof and the signature hi fi…..

Pretty much I believe. Transmission the same though I think the SDV8 405 had a bit more power.

Later SDV8's have extra emissions parts to make them Euro 6 standard / ULEZ compliant. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Hi all.

I'm away to look at a 61 plate 4.4 td V8 Vigue tomorrow but looking back through the MOTs for past couple of years its needed/needing lots of suspension repairs as in below

November last year MOT
Offside Front Lower Suspension arm ball joint has slight play (5.3.4 (a) (i))

November 2021
Offside Front Anti-roll bar linkage ball joint has slight play (5.3.4 (a) (i))
Offside Rear Anti-roll bar linkage ball joint has slight play (5.3.4 (a) (i))

Are these common faults or could there be something more suspicious behind it?

Thanks for any advice.

I’d say that’s pretty common on a car that’s best part of 3 tons. Just had all mine done. Parts aren’t daft expensive but can be a pain to do if you need to get old ball joints out.

ARB drop links are just 2 bolts.

I’d always do both sides if it were me. Just reread your message and I might be wrong saying ARB drop links, don’t think that’s on there.

That was copied and pasted from the MOT cgeck page. Prior to the last two years its been ok on MOTs. Failed once on tyres down to convas which did raise an eyebrow as to could the guy not afford to look afyer it properly. That maybe my suspicious mind tho. 🤣🤣

It’s normal that a reason for sale is the owner can no longer afford or justify the running costs. This is why L322 ownership is now the preserve of enthusiasts with either more money than sense or no sense at all.
The purchase price of an L322 is the cheapest part aspect of ownership… 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)
