Painful goodbye to my L322 - help?

Hi all,

Twas too brief a season with my dream car. For many it may be a Ferrari. For others a Porsche. Maybe a Bugatti. All I ever wanted was a post-2010 Range Rover L322.

In 2021, I returned to driving after 15 years (living in London negated it!) and got myself a 2012 L322 TDV8 Westminster., It was one of the 10th Anniversary Special Edition. Suffice as to say I was chuffed. I've looked after it and have had no problems thanks to common sense and preventative maintenance with my local Land Rover specialist.

The end of a great partnership
At the weekend, another driver came too fast across a roundabout, did not see I was already on the roundabout and into me. The Range Rover did her job and kept me totally safe and my dog in the boot. Inside the only damage was the speaker popping out slightly though everything was working. The door was another question with a nice big dent. Though I was hopeful. No mechanical or structural damage.

Today I got the news from the bodyshop. When they managed to open the door they found the sill had been pushed back and there was stress to the A-frame. Parts of £14-£15k and labour of £7-8k. They even reduced the labour rate to try and make the repair work. You know where this is heading......total loss. I'll get a settlement but, as we know, insurance companies don't take into account brand value or the love for the model. I am gutted. I truly loved this car and, in an odd emotion, feel guilty now that it looked after me and I can do nothing. How odd is that?

Help please?
So, with a very limited budget and the likelihood of having to go down a loan route anyway, I am in the market if anyone knows of a good L322 (ideally 2012) out there. Otherwise I may start looking at L405 in the 2014/5 year.

For now; goodbye Westie....

What a shame Sad

Seems this sort of thing only happens to the good ones.

If you have a car that you wouldn't mind being written off, or nicked and burnt out, it never happens..... .

£14-15k of parts?

Could you not buy a mint donor car and have enough left to cover the labour?

Just a thought from someone who knows nothing about car repairs but a lot about getting attached to a 'favourite' car...

Just as a thought, wife’s car got rear ended & they were going to write it off & pay way below what a replacement would cost. Just check the small print on your insurance ‘cos I’m sure it’s worded similar to ‘like for like’. They offered £6k & a replacement was nearer to £10k, in the end they repaired it. I bombarded them with Auto Trader adverts which they didn’t like, they use “Cap” valuations which differ to AT. May not help you get the Westie saved but may get you a few more dollars. Argue like hell with ‘em!😁 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

An impact like that on a 'normal' car could have a much worse outcome for the driver - much worse. This is a happy outcome if you look at it like that and a reminder to everyone who worries about running costs that they and their loved ones are in a safer place if another vehicle hits them than many other vehicles that are cheaper to run. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I guess it depends on how far you want to go with this. The sill may well be pushed in, but has it affected the alignment of the wheels? Because if it hasn't then this is probably repairable using parts from a reputable dismantler. If you decide to take the right-off value then please fight like hell for a decent settlement, I hate insurance companies with a passion, they exist purely to make money (yes, I know all companies do, it's just the underhandedness of insurance that irks me) and they do that by avoiding paying out or minimising their liability. Drives:

Unless you are going to keep it until it rots into the ground you will loose money repairing it as it's future value for a sale or trade-in will be dramatically reduced after such a repair. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I would get a second estimate on that damage. As from the photos, I would question any A post damage.

I would suspect a little B post & sill damage ( although the sill trims appear untouched). OSF wing looks undamaged & still in alignment.

If this is the case then a green part OSF door along with some panel work would make it repairable proposition if you were to retain it.

Stress to the A frame could well have been caused by the impact load on the door and its hinges that are bolted to it?

Hold out for the market value of a like for like replacement. The ombudsman has a definition of market value which is helpful if the insurance company offers you less. Gather some advertisements of same age / mileage vehicles to support your valuation.

Good luck...

A selection of adverts on Autotrader will help as evidence. Luckily the asking prices are high a the moment and these supply is short. This not being a lot of use for buying another but it should help with maximising your ins payout. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

This is why, after being similarly bitten by a no-fault write-off of SWMBOs car we both have gap insurance. For a few hundred quid for four years it's a no-brainer for me. Standard insurance policies are not fit for anything, the whole thing is a sham.

Without gap, there is no way I would be able to replace my car like-for-like in the event of a write off.

Edit to say - I did the whole adverts and harassment thing for weeks and weeks to no avail on SWMBO's car. Maybe it's just LV as an insurer but I wasn't prepared to take the risk again. FFRR SDV8 Autobiography

Part of the issue is not so much the repair cost as the cost of providing courtesy cars for an undefined timescale. With the ongoing issues of getting spare parts, even small trim pieces can delay repairs for weeks, the timescale for doing a proper fix can stretch for weeks.
As others have said if suspension is not damaged try and buy it back from insurers and get it repaired with used parts. Looks as though it could be used whilst collecting these? 2012 tdv8 Westminster arrived Jan 19 gone Dec 23
