Calibrating transfercase clutch etc

Hi!

I have a slight vibration/judder when my steering wheel is on full left lock. Nothing on the other side.

Had it at a Land Rover dealer and they did the double flush (clean oil came out of the transfer case) and after that they calibrated the transfer case.

Nothing changed really. After changing almost all bushes, suspension arms etc. Front and back I will change the left hand engine mount. I have a slight, very slight clunk coming from the front, it might be that the engine mount is giving up... the car has done about 270 000km now. 4.4 tdv8.

I have done a proper wheel alignment after that and I have also calibrated the steering angle sensor.

I'm not sure what the dealer did specifically. I have seen in the Gap Id tool that you can calibrate the clutch of the transfer case and also calibrate the position or range sensor of the transfer case. The new oil has only been in for about 1,5 months and 3500km roughly - so pretty recent. Is it worth a try to calibrate them both or better not If there is nothing more majorly wrong?

Just today I did the gap Id tool "self test" of the rear diff, all ok. All the offroad programs work - both front and rear diff lock up and release.

At full lock to the left the vibration is intermittent, not every time which makes is really hard to diagnose. However, if I switch from D to N it stops. The car shifts really smooth and I recently did a megaflush with new filters etc. No faults found at all with gap Id tool. Recently flushed the steering fluid and topped up LR spec one. Ive had a good "look around" and a few mechanic friends too - nothing obvious is loose etc. causing vibration.

I used to have 22 inch rims and now I have 20 inch 255/55 (almost new Pirellis). The car runs great otherwise. Would just be great to diagnose this properly. I've been to 3 sort of specialists in Sweden and a official dealer - yet no solution. Given the intermittent nature it is really hard to diagnose and in my neck of the wood there aren't many Land Rover/Range Rovers at all...

Any ideas? Any advice? Its very strange Fuji White 2011, 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE

I also do an oil change every 10 000km and keep the car very well serviced. The engine is a smooth as can be, no vibration really when the hood is up.

Id say my old Range Rover runs smoother than my mother in laws, basically brand new VW V6 diesel Touareg...

Her air suspension compressor failed after 25 000km, VW swapped it under warranty but still... felt pretty smug after all the cheeky jokes I hear about english cars and Land Rover reliability...

Which is also why I need this vibration sorted... Fuji White 2011, 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE

I had this on my L405 but it was consistent turning both directions. Double flushed and calibrated the transfer case three times (ie. six times fluid change in total!) and after each double flush it was fine for a couple of weeks then the problem would return. I spoke to two independent specialists who recommended replacing the transfer case (£££). In the end, I took a punt and put a sachet of Dr. Tranny Instant Shudder Fix in - no more judder and has been absoluely fine for at least 5k miles since Very Happy Best £9 I've ever spent! Thanks for the tip!

Will try lubegard to determine the problem. Fuji White 2011, 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE

Transfer box. It has a wet multiplate clutch so the effect is the same. Kev

I have the ETM diff in the back, I believe this also has a multi-plate clutch assembly (locking diff) - I have filled this with the Castrol SAF CARBON MOD PLUS.

I have a feeling that the diff is a little "sticky" - would you use the lubegard shudder fix for this type of situation too? Fuji White 2011, 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE

Glad it worked for you Gustav Thumbs Up

I haven't used it on a diff, but certainly worth a try. As you say, in theory it should be the same. Kev

I did a single oil change and clutch recalibration the other day and still getting some slight intermittent judder. I’ll have to do another drain and refill and see if it improves. I’m assuming the transfer case is similar to the locking rear diff and has a clutch pack in it. So would it actually be advisable to use friction modifiers as a solution?

I did see the LR bulletin says the o do double flush and SW update. Has anyone done a transfer case software update via GAP?

I was going to, but my transfer case already had the latest software on it so GAP refunded my money.

The instant shudder fix is only a temporary solution. It worked for 12 months for me. After 12 months the problem returned so I did another double flush and tube of instant shudder fix. Problem sorted again.

In the drained oil, I can see that there are small metallic particles so something is breaking down, probably a bearing. You can buy rebuild kits for the DD295 so at some point in the near future I'll drop it and rebuild it with all new bearings. Kev

I had the same issue with mine over a year ago - I did a single oil change and recalibrated the clutch and had to drive it for a couple days before I could do the second change.
I was disappointed that the single change didn't improve the problem as I couldn't see how 2 changes would fix it if 1 didn't. I was wrong, did the second change and the problem was sorted.
I would do the second change before trying anything else.

The first change has made an improvement so I’ll order some more oil today and do a second change. Thanks for the heads up.

You put the Lubegaurd in the rear diff just added 2oz or did a fluid change and 2oz?
