Oil dilution due to dpf and subsequent engine failures

Interesting info on the issue of oil dilution and the resultant engine failures in TDV6 and SDV8 engines.

The only issue seems to be trying to find 5W40 oil that is C1 grade.

I'm concerned by the low oil pressure in both of these engines, but especially the TDV8/SDV8 because of its willingness to work at very low revs. I'm about to fit an oil pressure gauge to monitor the pressure but in the meantime I'm avoiding working the engine at less than about 1300 RPM but as that's the revs at normal highway speeds here of 100 kph, sport mode and manual shifting is needed to keep the revs up.
PS your heading is misleading - inserting subsequent before engine failures would be better.

They don't give the driving style used to get those results.

I'd be surprised if that was true for motorway driving. Maybe if you only ever do short trips?

I change mine every 4k miles anyway due to my driving style and I watch the app starting to count down to plan ahead for oil and filter changes.
So glad I never had the software update which changed the max oil dilution for service from around 6% to 10% fuel dilution!
Even 6% is bad.
Some reading here, mostly about the Ingenium engine, but it also effects V6 and V8 engines with dpf.

This is why in the UK we change the oil every 6 months as a matter of course, don’t we? Shocked

And also why we monitor soot levels and prevent failed DPF regens to minimise dilution also?

Also, you really need to change the oil pump minimum every 6-7 years, -with the TDV6 engine, this coincides with the timing belt changes. An oil pump failure can lead to a f Censored cked engine and a five-figure bill. Thumbs Up “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

The last two cars I've owned (both Mercs) were traded with over 270k miles on each of them, but before i bought them I looked in the trader for high mileage models, mainly because I was doing 35k miles/year and if I saw them with 400k miles on them, then I knew that it would be possible for them to do that mileage.
Same thing here, I looked at the page how many miles, and started looking at L405's 2013/2014 and there's a few with mileage in excess of 130k miles, one with over 215k. (SDV8)
My own car has just under 104000, and I'll be adding it to your list. My annual mileage has dropped to 16k, so won't be racking up the miles any more, but I'm thinking that I'll still be doing a couple of oil services a year, and get the garage to check the dilution of the oil each time.
Certainly something to keep an eye on.

I am carrying out an oil and filter change every 6 months which equates to circa 6,000 miles. My oil service reminder has just popped up right on schedule (6,000 miles since last service).

I was just trying to decide if I should move to a 5W40. I can’t find a C1 grade but I can find C3 grade, which is still low SAPS but with an improved HTHS factor.

Or stick to the LR approved oil and carry on changing every 6 months.

Sorry, I probably wasn’t very clear. I can find the specified Castrol to LR spec no problem and this is what I have used so far. It seems the 5W40 is very difficult if not impossible to find in C1 classification but is available in C3.

From what I understand the ACEA have phased out C1 classification as of 2023 as an ‘old’ spec so we will have to move to a C3 or other classification on any new oils.

C4 supersedes C1, not C2 or C3.

ACEA dropped the C1 category from the 2022 edition of their oil sequences. C1 oil is primarily for Land Rover applications. I’m sure the oil companies will continue to manufacture C1 oils for the foreseeable future.
